I need to talk about the atmosphere in this book because wow. The opening scene is just—chef's kiss. Qi Xun walking through the Furong Post Station with frost on her lashes, breathing warmth into her hands, pulling her worn cloak tighter. You can feel the cold. You can feel the weight of that snow at ankle depth. And then you walk into that room and the contrast hits you like a wall. "The chamber was modest but well-furnished... Blood had spread across half the room, reaching the doorway, frozen into a frosted lake." Frosted lake. That's the kind of detail that stops me mid-chapter. The blood didn't just pool—it froze. The cold preserved everything. And the corpse, with its gray-blue skin and closed eyes, almost peaceful except for the impossibility of it. Four parts reassembled like a puzzle someone refused to finish. The author doesn't need gore for shock value; the horror is in the precision, the cleanliness, the silence. And the post station itself—built in the previous dynasty, expanded over time, sitting beneath the Yanxing Mountains like a fortress disguised as a rest stop. Fifty fast horses. Warehouses with wide doors and narrow windows. A drum tower. The whole place feels like it has history, like it's witnessed things before. The incense sticks standing upright in the snow beyond the railing, extinguished but still planted there like a silent prayer. Who put them there? When? And why Buddhist offerings in a murder scene? The visual contrast between the warm, orderly world of the officials in their embroidered robes and the frozen, bloody chaos inside that eastern chamber is just cinematic. I kept imagining the lighting—lanterns casting long shadows, the white snow outside against the dark interior, the steam rising from bodies in the cold. This isn't just setting; it's mood. The world feels alive, suffocating, and beautiful all at once.
"My sister is a precious jewel, noble and unparalleled. How could she be someone you can marry or discard as you please?" This line from the emperor absolutely wrecked me. Like I know this is a romance novel but the sibling bond between Shen Zhaoli and her brother is genuinely one of the most touching things in the story. The emperor could have just granted Xie Yuheng's request easily — it would have been politically convenient, right? Xie Yuheng is the prime minister after all. But he doesn't even consider it because his first instinct is whether Shen Zhaoli would be happy. And when he finds out Xie Yuheng didn't even ask her opinion, the emperor is furious not because of disrespect to himself but because Xie Yuheng doesn't understand Shen Zhaoli at all. I also loved the detail about Old Madam Xie sitting on that uncomfortable chair and suddenly remembering how comfortable her life was when Shen Zhaoli was around. She's regretting how she treated her — that's some quiet emotional damage right there. And then there's Zhou Qingyun discovering her father has a mistress and two children outside. Her cold reaction, the way she just goes to find out more instead of breaking down — it's subtle but it shows she's not going to take this lying down. The emotional threads in this section are everywhere and they're all tangled together in the best way.

I love how Ben's journey is full of ups and downs—it feels so real!
A good novel that only requires a few improvements in description and dialogue to make it even better.

This is a shameless author's review, and yes; this is probably my fifth book on Webnovel that would soon be contracted successfully. Mu Shen is my MC and there are a lot of mysteries governing that name. This review will serve as— Q/A: Questions and Answers. If you have any questions about my book, relay it over in this review section and I would be ready to answer all of your questions.
This is an amazing masterpiece. Even though this book just began, I'm fully recommending it. I also hope you read this amazing amazing masterpiece.
very fun. cool characters, good action. made me actually laugh out loud and few times. keep it up author!
A really great read! I was really immersed with its world and how the characters feel they're real and alive—even though they're uh quite the opposite within the context of the story lol—after-alive rather lmao. The updates slowing down though is unfortunate, hopefully the author's doing well and taking the time to take care of themselves. Hoping as well they won't give up on this, because really, it's a great read. Keep up the good work!
