shameless author here rating his own book a five out five. anyways this review is about what this book is gonna be its'sa high stakes action-fantasy with a lot of emotional and heartfelt moments mixed together with the horror that the inhumans(what the monsters in this series is called) and the morality of gifts and the weight of decisions. also this is gonna be a multi-pov series and the story will be told through the eyes of three people mainly 'aelric calyx' is the first the other two right now are unnamed and will be explored in a manner similar to him all three of them will be used to show a different perspective of the same world and will be chasing their own goals.is it gonna be bloody? absolutely it will be very, very bloody but not meaninglessly.what is the magic system? I will answer it after chapter five! if you have any other questions feel free to ask i will try my best to answer them

Pei Bingyuan. Oh man, this guy. I need to talk about him because he is literally the most relatable frustrated scholar in the entire novel and I have so many feelings about his arc. So Lord Xu offers him this tribute examination spot at the Imperial Academy, and Pei Bingyuan just... stalls. For days. He's standing in the courtyard looking at bare branches, he's muttering to himself, his parents are sighing. And then his father finally says something that breaks my heart: "You've taken exams for so many years—it's enough..." And Pei Bingyuan explodes. "Not enough! I would rather be called a stubborn donkey than a coward." DONKEY. He calls himself a donkey. And you know what? I get it. I genuinely get it. He became a xiucai at sixteen—sixteen!—and now he's nearly forty with nothing to show for it while his cousins are already six-rank officials. That's not pride, that's... that's the entire architecture of a man's identity crumbling in front of him. But then—the turning point. He walks by the classroom, sees Huai and Jin copying the Analects, and Huai recites that passage: "At fifteen, I set my mind on learning; at thirty, I stood firm... at forty, I was free from doubts..." And Pei Bingyuan just... stops. He picks up his son's paper and it has exactly those words written on it. The timing is almost cinematic. He accepts the offer the next morning and tells his father: "Huai and Jin are rare talents. The aspirations I have not fulfilled, let them carry on. Their future glory will be mine as well." That line. That line recontextualizes everything. It's not defeat. It's not surrender. It's a man who looked at his sons and decided that his pride was too expensive a price to pay when there were other ways to win. He chose a different path—not because he was weak, but because he was a father. And honestly? That's more courageous than any exam he could have failed.
