Okay so let me just say this out loud—Lu Yao is one of the most interesting characters I've come across in a while. On the surface, he's this terrifying figure. Half his face is covered in a centipede-like scar, he's got this reputation that makes kids quiet down and adults avoid him. The backstory alone is brutal: at ten years old he hacked down three vagrants with a cleaver, blood everywhere, and then in five years his whole family died one by one. That's not just trauma, that's a lifetime of loss packed into a decade. But here's the thing that got me—every time he acts all cold and gruff, he's actually doing something soft. He runs out of the cabin because he's flustered by her offering him steamed buns, then immediately throws her a package with clothes and actual food. He tells her not to get too close, calls himself not a good person, and yet he's the one making sure she's taken care of. The scene where he presses her against the wall and then abruptly leaves because he can't control himself? Chilling and hilarious at the same time. And that moment when he sees her happily eating the braised chicken leg and his lips curl up just slightly—I literally had to put the book down. This man is a walking contradiction and I am HERE for it.
'Who is it?!' 'It's me…' I literally screamed at my phone. The author just dropped the most perfect cliffhanger after what was arguably the most intimate scene in the entire book and I am NOT okay. Like, think about the emotional arc of this whole chapter. Xu Zhiyuan goes from deeply focused on her work—hair loose, annotations everywhere, completely absorbed—to this radiant smile the second she sees He Jiayu. Her professors literally notice. They CHUCKLE about it. The scene is basically built around this contrast between her serious academic life and the way she completely melts for him. And then the kiss—oh my god, the kiss. 'Her lips parted slightly as she gasped for breath, her eyes still hazy with lingering emotion.' The author could have just ended on a sweet note but NO, they had to interrupt with a ringtone. And that 'tsk!' from He Jiayu? He's annoyed but also kind of amused? And Xu Zhiyuan bolts like a startled rabbit. The tension between them is absolutely electric and this interruption is both cruel and brilliant because now we're left wondering WHO is calling and what it means for their little bubble. I need answers NOW.

Not big on these types of genre, but the story is dark and twisted. I went into this expecting the cliche Isekai, but boy was I wrong. If you’re going into this story expecting the generic isekai troupe, you’ll be surprised. It caught my attention and reminds me a lot of overlord, I love it, author!
