Okay, I need to sit with this for a second because the symbolism in this chapter is so dense I'm still unpacking it. The marionette. Let me just say it first: the marionette is EVERYTHING. Xu Qin complains about being puppets bound by family strings, and Meng Yanchen buys one the next day. Is he mocking her? Comforting her? Or is he finally seeing himself in that wooden figure—strings pulled by his own contradictions? When he tightens his grip and the strings bite into his knuckles, that's not just physical tension. That's him realizing he's the puppet too. Who's pulling HIS strings? His mother? His obligations? His inability to say what he actually feels? And then there's the chameleon. The chapter title literally calls him that. He changes colors depending on who's watching—cold ice with Xu Qin, distant businessman with Shi Yan, vulnerable and confused with Fan Shengmei. But a chameleon doesn't have a true color. What happens when someone sees past all the disguises? The car keys are another symbol I can't stop thinking about. Xu Qin returned them during her family spat, and they've been sitting there unused. She wants them back but can't ask—she'd lose face. So she uses her brother as an excuse. The keys represent independence, freedom, the life she had before everything got complicated. She's clinging to material things because she doesn't know how to ask for emotional things. And Fan Shengmei—she keeps appearing in doorways, thresholds, between spaces. The aquarium. The office. The street with her child. She's always half-visible, half-hidden, just like Meng Yanchen's feelings for her. The blurred figure in the photograph that she zooms in on? That's the whole story right there. Everything is slightly out of focus, and we're all just trying to make sense of what we're seeing.
I have to talk about how the dialogue in this section works because it's actually really clever. On the surface, there's not a ton of dialogue—especially in the dreamscape sequences. But what's there is devastating in its simplicity. The five-year-old Xie Chenzhou saying 'Mother, don't leave me behind' three times, each time more desperate, each time more broken—that's not over-written dialogue, that's the kind of repetition that mirrors how a traumatized child would actually behave. And his mother never says anything meaningful. 'If you dare follow me again, I'll kill you.' That's it. Cold, clinical, and absolutely chilling. Then there's the young man in the cage who speaks in this eerily gentle tone: 'Undying, your flesh and blood can save countless lives. So please, just endure it a little longer.' The contrast between his soft words and his horrific actions is genuinely unsettling. He's not cackling or anything—he's polite about it. That's so much worse. And Sang Nian's dialogue is mostly screams and fragmented words because she's behind a barrier, but when she finally breaks through and shouts 'Xie Chenzhou!'—that single line carries so much weight. It's the first time anyone has called him by his real name in seven years. The dialogue here doesn't need to be fancy. It just needs to be true, and it is.
Okay, can we just talk about how absolutely adorable Xie Fangzhu is in this section? Like, the guy is literally blushing so hard you can see it from across the room, and Shen Yingying is just sitting there thinking he's the easiest villain to manipulate ever. The moment where she tells him to say 'Wife, I was wrong. This was my fault. How could I ever dislike you? You're my precious baby. I love you more than anything...' and he actually says it? I nearly fell off my chair. The man is so flustered and awkward but he just caves every single time. And the funniest part is that Shen Yingying herself thinks it's almost fortunate that she met him at this stage—before he fully matured into the scary villain from the novel. If she'd arrived later, she probably wouldn't have been able to pull off any of this manipulation. There's this one line where Xie Fangzhu is sitting with his back to her, clearly embarrassed, and she's thinking about how much better this version of him is compared to the one whose gaze was filled with darkness. It's such a small detail but it shows how her feelings are already shifting. She went from seeing him as a stepping stone to actually finding him... pleasing to the eye? That's a whole character arc right there. The original owner of this body was using him as a fallback while secretly hunting for someone more impressive, but Shen Yingying is genuinely trying to make this work. Their dynamic has this weird push-and-pull energy where she's constantly testing him and he's constantly falling for it. What do you think is going to happen when he finally realizes she's been playing him this whole time? Or is he already past caring?
