Summary

"Shen Yingying, you should pay more attention to hygiene." He says this so politely, so gently, and yet what he REALLY means is: "Shen Yingying, you're incredible. You've practically raised eighteen generations of the rats' ancestors." I cannot stop thinking about this exchange. The gap between what he says and what he means is where the entire comedy of this scene lives. And Shen Yingying's response? Just "..." The ellipsis says everything. She knows exactly what he's implying. She's not fooled. But then the narration tells us he "coughed awkwardly twice before finally saying tactfully"—tactfully! He's being TACTFUL about calling her a slob. This man is a treasure. And then later, Chen Wenxing's dialogue is absolutely unhinged in the best way. "Good heavens..." he mutters, then slaps his own mouth like that'll fix it. His wife says the line of the chapter: "That girl's methods really are impressive! If only our daughter could learn even a fraction of them!" I laughed out loud. The author's voice in the narration is also doing such funny work—"It was enough to leave someone flattered beyond measure… my foot." That little aside, that break in the fourth wall, it's so casual and so sharp. The narrative voice feels like a friend telling you a story at a bar, not some stiff omniscient narrator. I'm obsessed with how distinct every character sounds.

The way she puts on this radiant, sunbeam smile and loops her arm through Xie Fangzhu's arm like she's the most devoted wife in the world? Chilling. Absolutely chilling. And the best part? She's fully aware she's performing. She thinks to herself: "Could someone whose persona was to have eyes full of nothing but her Husband refuse? The answer was no." My god, the self-awareness. The calculation. And yet—here's the thing that got me—when Xie Fangzhu actually smiles back at her, when he pushes his bicycle and walks beside her, there's this tiny moment where the performance almost feels real. Or maybe he's performing too? The text says his lips pressed together and "a complicated look appeared in his eyes" when she was being all coquettish. What is he feeling? Pity? Amusement? Something else? I keep coming back to that look. Is he in on the act, or is he genuinely confused by this version of his wife? Either way, the tension between them is delicious. I need to talk about the wooden house scene because it's one of those moments where the setting just speaks for itself without any fancy description. So Xie Fangzhu built this tiny two-room wooden house on a hillside behind the mining district residential compound because the original owner didn't have Mining District Household Registration. He built one room first, the original owner threw a fit because she wanted a brick house, so he built an extra small room. And then she kicked him into the small room and took the big one for herself. Now Shen Yingying is standing in that small room—the one where the actual husband sleeps. The detail about the mosquito net is such a small thing but it immediately paints the picture. This is a poor mining district couple living in a self-built wooden shack, and yet Xie Fangzhu went out and bought food from the canteen for her without even being asked. The contrast between the shabby setting and the tenderness of the moment is kind of beautiful. There's also the detail about the checkered bedsheet with that red stain on it—such a visceral, specific image that grounds the whole scene in physical reality. And the cotton binding cloth that Shen Yingying struggles to put on, how it flattens her curves and is extremely uncomfortable. These tiny environmental details make the world feel lived-in. You can practically smell the coal dust and feel the cramped wooden walls. The author doesn't over-describe anything but every small detail serves double duty—building the world while also revealing character. That's good writing right there.

But it's also this stark, almost violent splash of color against the domestic setting, like truth itself can't help but stain everything it touches. Then there's the binding cloth—the cotton wrap that the original owner used to conceal her curves, that Shen Yingying finds uncomfortable and restrictive. This is such a loaded symbol. It represents the original owner's attempt to hide her true self, to flatten herself into something more acceptable, more controllable. The fact that Shen Yingying, a modern woman, can't even stand wearing it says everything about the difference between these two women. The original owner bound herself physically while plotting to betray her husband, and Shen Yingying is struggling to bind herself at all. Okay so let me just say this about Xie Fangzhu — the man is a SLY FOX and I love him for it. The moment Shen Yingying pretends to fall, his FIRST reaction is literally that she's faking it. He doesn't just see through it, he's ALREADY seen through it. And yet — and YET — he still picks her up bridal style. Like bro, you know she's lying and you're STILL playing along?? But here's what actually got me: when she said "You're my man. Unless you're the one who decides you don't want me anymore, no one else will ever take you away" — that wasn't acting. I swear on my life that wasn't acting. The text literally says his heart skipped a violent beat and his expression cracked for the FIRST TIME in his life. This man has been stoic and unreadable since page one and Shen Yingying just HANDS HIM HER TRUTH wrapped in shameless words and he doesn't know how to process it. And the best part? He recovers by saying "Let's eat." Like bro, I just heard a woman claim me as hers and my first response is to talk about lunch?? The fact that he's flustered but trying so hard to play it cool is the most endearing thing I've read all year. Meanwhile Wu Xiaoxia is just... sitting there watching this whole thing unfold, completely outplayed, and I cannot stop laughing. She came here to be the victim and Shen Yingying turned the entire scene into a theatrical performance where Wu Xiaoxia is the only one who didn't get the script.

We're now alone with them, and the pace shifts from chaotic to slow, deliberate, almost suffocating. Every movement matters. Every word is weighted. He walks to the corner. She sees the pole. Her heart stops. She begs. He pries her fingers off. She kisses him. The pole falls. Then immediately after—the emotional explosion. She breaks down, confesses everything, and then pivots to this desperate declaration about sleeping with him to prove her purity. The chapter doesn't end with resolution. It ends with her unbuttoning her blouse and him being too stunned to respond. That's a cliffhanger that doesn't rely on mystery but on emotional uncertainty. Will he stop her? Will he let her?
