Summary

I went into this novel expecting a romance and I'm leaving with a philosophy degree. The marionette scene in Chapter 17 is the thematic keystone of everything. Fan Shengmei picks up this finely crafted puppet dangling on golden strings, and her explanation is one of the most beautiful passages I've read about control and autonomy: 'Without these strings, it's just a pile of useless wood. With someone pulling the strings, it comes alive. Maybe not in the story it wanted, but at least it grows flesh and bone… until one day, it might even find its soul.' She's talking about a toy. She's also talking about EVERYTHING. Fan Shengmei has spent her life being pulled by strings—her family's financial demands, society's expectations, poverty's invisible hands. But she's reframing the narrative: the strings don't make you less real. They make you MOVING. The question isn't whether you have strings—it's WHO's holding them and whether they're giving you purpose or just pulling you apart. Meng Yanchen's response—'No one likes being a puppet'—is the entire male gaze in one sentence. He sees control as degradation. She sees it as potential. This is the fundamental disagreement between every relationship in this book. And then he writes on the gift card: 'To the puppet who has grown a soul.' He's giving her the puppet AND claiming it for himself. Is he honoring her philosophy or appropriating it? Both. That's Meng Yanchen—every gesture contains its opposite. The chestnut cake as recurring symbol is also worth noting. Xu Qin asks for it as a transactional gesture. Fan Shengmei receives it as something she never had. Same object, completely different meanings. The author is building a language of objects here and I'm here for it.

Okay so I need to talk about this scene where Meng Yancheng writes out his so-called "charges" against Fan Shengmei and I literally screamed. The man is sitting there like some kind of courtroom judge delivering verdicts on her personality and I was dying. "Not considerate (×)" — he writes this, then immediately crosses it out because he remembers her fumbling hands wrapping him in towels. "Greedy (×)" — then he remembers she only took fifty thousand instead of a hundred grand. "Noisy (×)" — and then he can still hear her voice in his head like it's some kind of anchor. This is the most Meng Yancheng thing ever. He's trying SO hard to be cold and analytical about her, but every single "charge" collapses under the weight of his own memories. And then he does the luxury goods list?! The man is literally keeping score of her taste in handbags now. That's not a business mind, that's a man who's completely gone. What I love most is how their dynamic has shifted — she's the one who held the power last night by saying no, and now he's the one obsessively tracking her social media. Xu Qin's whole arc is also fascinating here because Yezi basically weaponized her. The sister dynamic went from protective to poisoned in one conversation. Yezi's line "I just don't want them to have it easy" is pure venom, and Xu Qin's reaction — nails digging into her palms, denying everything — shows how fragile her position really is. She's not actually secure at all, and Yezi knows it. The Meng family dynamics are so layered: Fu Wenying genuinely thinks Fan Shengmei is this considerate friend, while Xu Qin is being systematically gaslit into paranoia. I need to talk about how this section is paced because honestly it's masterful and I want to dissect it. The opening confrontation between Xu Qin and Fan Shengmei at the police station—this is where the pacing is absolutely razor-sharp. It starts cold, almost dismissive on Fan Shengmei's part, then Xu Qin fires back with 'You'll never understand how suffocating it feels to live a life arranged by others.' And Fan Shengmei's response? She doesn't even try to understand. She just laughs and says 'All I know is—without your brother's two hundred thousand, today you'd be even more suffocated.' That's it. That one line deflates the entire scene and pivots it into something completely different. The tension doesn't build—it SNAPS. And then Meng Yanchen is revealed to have been watching the whole time. Perfect structural pivot. Then the author does something I love: they CUT to Meng Yanchen alone in the car. No transition, no explanation. Just him, the red light, the neon blur, and that one sentence echoing in his head. This is where the pacing slows down intentionally, almost suffocatingly slow, mirroring his internal state. The chapter title 'Yet He Never Spares Himself' lands so much harder here because we're forced to sit with him in silence. The chapter ends with the black Lincoln 'parked quietly in the distance.' Meng Yanchen is watching. The reader knows it. She doesn't. That cliffhanger structure is chef's kiss.

There's a symbol running through these chapters that I can't stop thinking about, and it's the bags. Every single bag in this story represents something different, and the author is playing with them like a chess master. Fan Shengmei's fake Hermès—given to her by Qu Lianjie, who basically told her she doesn't deserve the real thing. This bag represents the false promises of upward mobility, the idea that you can buy your way into a better life if you just have the right accessories. It's also the instrument of her humiliation at the banquet, the thing that marks her as an outsider. Xu Qin's real Hermès—identical on the surface but gleaming with genuine leather and a golden clasp. A gift from Meng Yancheng. This bag represents everything Fan Shengmei is told she wants: wealth, status, acceptance into the Meng family's world. But it's also a leash. Xu Qin literally throws her jewelry and the Birkin back at Meng Yancheng and says "Is that enough for you?" And then the real Hermès that Meng Yancheng sends Fan Shengmei—six zeroes, one of those rare treasures that money can't even buy. This bag is an apology, yes, but it's also a test. The visual contrast in these chapters is absolutely cinematic and I have to talk about it. We open with this swaying chandelier above Meng Yancheng — luxury, wealth, the whole world of Guokun Group's CEO. Fan Shengmei wrapping him in towels, the ice bucket, the villa with floor-to-ceiling windows. Everything is polished and controlled. And then BOOM — we're in Fan Shengmei's family home and it's reek of cheap tobacco and sweat, kitchen knives flashing, a mother clawing through her daughter's bag like a madwoman. The author doesn't even need to describe the Fan family's apartment much because the atmosphere does the work. You can feel the desperation, the claustrophobia, the way five burly men can swarm one woman and the mother HELPS them. It's a different world entirely, and the juxtaposition is brutal. But what really struck me visually was Xu Qin's study. That butterfly specimen — the Cyprus Blue — and how she swears its wings trembled. For a second I thought it was actually alive, or that she was hallucinating from stress. The iridescent wings shimmering under the light while Yezi stands there poisoning her mind. It's such a delicate, beautiful image that contrasts with the ugliness of what's happening. And then the final image of the chapter — Meng Yancheng standing before that floor-to-ceiling window, city lights fracturing across the glass, spinning his phone in his palm. An OUTSIDER notices what the protagonist herself refuses to see. That's not just good writing—that's a plot weapon. And then Meng Yanchen overhears it. Of course he overhears it. The universe conspires to make him hear the one thing that should change everything but doesn't, because he's trapped in his own pattern of silence. Meanwhile, the Chen Jiakang subplot is quietly building this slow-burn tension that I didn't expect but absolutely love. He's not a cartoon villain—he's calculating, yes, but the text makes you understand WHY Fan Shengmei hasn't shut him down completely. She's thirty-something, carrying her family's mortgage, tired, lonely. Chen offers a version of stability that feels almost attainable. The plot doesn't judge her for wavering, and that's what makes it feel real. And then—BAM—the Birkin bag reveal at the end.
