And the detail about the cat—half-dead when found, now sleek and plump—shows us that Zhaoxun's power isn't just combat-related. She can nurture. She can restore. In a world of decay, that's its own kind of miracle. I keep coming back to the air conditioning. In a story about the end of the world, someone is keeping things cool. That's either arrogance or hope. I haven't decided which.
Okay so this chapter is basically the calm before the storm and I love how the author sets it up. You've got these three women just enjoying a banquet, chatting about something seemingly unrelated—women's independence, marriage, all that—and then BAM, the Fifth Prince shows up and the whole atmosphere shifts. The plot is quietly building this web of political tension beneath what looks like a social gathering. I noticed how the author introduces this mysterious young lady who supposedly outshines Guan Wan, the number one beauty in Yunjing. Who is she? Why is she here? Princess Yiyue personally invited her. That detail alone sent me spiraling into theories. And then the Fifth Prince—someone who absolutely should NOT be at a princess's residence—just appears. The plot is threading these needles so carefully. Every character's reaction tells you something: Guan Wan's immediate urge to flee, Gu Yingzhen's polite deflection, Ming Shu's quiet observation. The narrative arc here is all about foreshadowing. The banquet hasn't even properly started and already the reader knows this is going to be anything but ordinary. The author doesn't spell it out, which is exactly what makes it work. You're left connecting dots, and that's the fun part.
I need to talk about Xiao Ziyi because this character is so much more interesting than the typical rebirth novel male lead. He's not just handsome and talented—he's genuinely observant and cautious. The author gives us this moment where Xiao Ziyi reflects on Jiang Lanru's behavior: she looked at them on the train like she already knew them, but he's certain they'd never met. Instead of dismissing this, he files it away. He thinks about spies, about being trained since childhood. This is a man who has been preparing for danger his entire life, and he's not wrong to be suspicious. The fact that he decides to wait and watch rather than confront her immediately shows real strategic thinking. But then there's the Lin Yiran dynamic, and it's completely different. With her, he's not guarded. When she's in the tree picking fruit, the author describes sunlight on her lashes, and he finds himself smiling. That's not calculated—that's genuine. And when she tosses him fruit and asks if he can catch it, he doesn't hesitate. He catches every single one. The physical act of catching becomes this intimate moment where he's watching her, making sure she's safe when she climbs down. The contrast between how he treats Jiang Lanru versus Lin Yiran is brilliant. With Jiang Lanru, he's analytical, watching for motives. With Lin Yiran, he's present, attentive, almost shy when she notices his book. The moment she says "One day, you'll definitely become a brilliant scientist" and his heart skips a beat—that's because no one has ever affirmed him so directly. His teachers and family have told him he's talented, but they've also burdened him with expectations. Lin Yiran's words feel different because they're sincere and unburdened. Zhuang Wenting is also fascinating in how she handles rejection. She's been pursuing Xiao Ziyi repeatedly and getting turned down, but she doesn't give up. The author shows her laughing at Jiang Lanru's expense after being rejected, which reveals she's not entirely innocent—she's competitive and a bit petty, but also genuinely persistent. And Lin Yiran's family! Her second sister-in-law is making clothes for her, her mother is kind but weak against her own family's demands, and her uncle is already causing trouble. The family dynamics feel lived-in and real.

The book is very good. Its clear that the author has if not read, at least witnessed many good works. I can sense the building of the story from the first chapter. And there is a lot of philosophical language as well that adds a depth of awe. However, If I were to give one piece of advice then I would say to simplify some of the moments. Not everything has to be a lesson learned or an idea created. Sometimes things can exist as they are. There is glory to simplicity.
It is 5 star. Why because it is written quite well for a 1st book. The story is not rushed as you can visual the events written on it. Kodus Author Sama. Add it to library.

honestly I love this author! Her books take on a different take on your usual story she keeps you on your toes the entire time you are reading! The twists and turns in this books were unreal! I loved trying to figure out what was going on with all the characters!
