She wants to compete, to project power through appearance. But she never shows up. Her armor is left hanging in a closet. Then there's the lamb bone that Da Chun picks up during the dinner. 'Just like this bone! Before, the meat was always snatched away by others, but today we finally get to gnaw on it to our heart's content!' A Man slams it on the table like a magistrate's gavel and declares their atelier will be that bone — something others can only smell and stare at helplessly. These two objects bookend the entire passage. Chen Wanqing's weapons are decorative, performative, meant to intimidate from a distance. The bone is earned, consumed, real. It's about the difference between appearing powerful and actually being powerful. And then there's the calligraphy that Pei Yanshu refuses to let Shen Nianyi take down — described as 'uniquely ugly' but worth three bolts of satin. Something ugly and imperfect that has real value. The story keeps asking: what actually matters? Appearance or substance? Performance or results? The gold thread robe vs the lamb bone. The ugly calligraphy vs the fancy storefront. Shen Nianyi has been building something real while everyone else was busy dressing up.
The setting of this story is honestly one of its strongest assets and I don't think enough people are talking about it. You've got this mining district that operates like its own little town — everyone knows everyone, gossip spreads in two hours, neighbors are literally waiting outside Xie Fangzhu's house to watch him discipline his wife. It's claustrophobic in the best way. There's no privacy, no escape, and that amplifies everything. The detail about the neighbors is particularly chilling. They're not neutral observers — they're actively egging him on. "Give her a good beating! Teach her a proper lesson!" One woman literally suggests breaking her legs. And the text makes it clear that this is because Xie Fangzhu has been carefully managing public perception, letting everyone believe he's the victim of a wicked wife. The mining district has been primed to hate Shen Yingying before she even does anything wrong in this version of events. I also appreciate the period details — the fifty yuan, the state-owned factory, the coal mine job. It's clearly set in a specific era of Chinese industrial history and the author doesn't over-explain it. You just absorb it through the world. The tree trunk scene in Chapter 1, the cramped living quarters, the gathered crowd outside the door — every location feels lived-in and specific. It doesn't feel like a generic historical backdrop, it feels like a place where people actually breathe and gossip and judge each other.
