They arrive at Songqing Hall having had approximately zero meaningful conversation but the author makes you laugh through it so you don't notice you're being set up for the emotional bomb that drops in Chapter 9. And then BOOM—parents discussion, dowry rejection, "you show no regard for your parents," the whole thing unravels in what feels like five minutes but is actually several days of narrative time. The author is playing with two different clocks here: the real-time clock of their marriage (days passing, dowry being sorted, servants being managed) and the emotional clock (each interaction layering more understanding or misunderstanding on top of the last). The chapter ends with them in a carriage in silence, heading to her natal home, and Pei Jingzhou's internal monologue has hardened into this tragic misconception about who she is. That's a cliffhanger that doesn't rely on danger or drama but on the quiet horror of two people who keep missing each other. The pacing here is masterful because it makes you FEEL the accumulation of small moments building toward a breaking point.
