The pacing in these chapters is absolutely ruthless and I am here for it. Chapter 20-21 basically operate on a comedy-of-errors track. Cheng Xi demands a toilet, gets refused, makes a scene at the training ground, comes home and SLAMS the door on Qin An. Classic. Then the next morning—BOOM—he's already laying bricks. The pivot from conflict to resolution happens so fast you almost miss it, and that's the point. The author doesn't let the tension sit. It builds, it snaps, and then immediately pivots to the next beat. Then Zhao Yinghua enters and the pacing shifts into gossip-horror mode. She's not just a neighbor—it's like the entire alley becomes a Greek chorus of judgment. The scene where she's spreading rumors, the crowd growing, voices rising—each paragraph adds another layer of pressure. And then Qin An appears. Silence. The bucket handle creaking. One by one, the women realize they've been wrong. The release of tension when he walks away is perfect. But then—AND THIS IS THE BEST PART—the story immediately pivots from romantic tension (the abs scene, the rice moment) to DOMESTIC DISASTER. Cheng Xi tries to cook. A fire starts. She runs outside covered in soot. And Zhao Yinghua—of all people—screams "Battalion Commander Qin's house is on fire!" to passing soldiers. The chapter doesn't let you breathe. Romance → gossip → romance → fire. It's chaotic in the best way. Every time you think the scene is settling, something explodes. Literally.
Such a wonderful book I just came across. I was interested by the book cover at first and finally reading, I just have to salute the author. This is a very interesting book.
it started off good then it had repetitive paragraphs, names of characters where not consisnt and then the story started jumping all around. not worth paying for to read the same paragraphs six times over
