the first two chapters are intriguing. I'll love to read more
The manor setting in these chapters is rendered with such tactile specificity that I could feel the Persian rugs under my feet and hear the distant hum of the city beyond the gates. The second-floor hallway where Xu Qiao pauses, listening to the conversation between Xu Rou and the Xitong, has this almost cinematic quality—the way she freezes, the way the words filter through the wood, the precise distance of fifty meters that becomes her new hunting ground. It's a brilliant use of spatial awareness as narrative device. The lawn scene with Chocolate the Samoyed is deceptively simple. On the surface, it's just two girls playing fetch with a dog. But the author layers it with so much subtext—the positioning, the frisbee flying between them like a metaphor for control and evasion, the way Xu Qiao directs Xu Rou's movements with mechanical precision. When Xu Qiao suddenly calls for Aunt Zhang and excuses herself, leaving Xu Rou frustrated and confused, the scene shifts from pastoral to psychological thriller in a single beat. The sunlight, the green grass, the friendly dog—all of it becomes part of the performance. The dining room sequence is equally masterful. Butler Lin reporting on the renovation, the siblings taking their seats, the careful choreography of who speaks and who stays silent. Xu Rou's internal panic as she realizes the room next to hers, though small, will be connected to create a space even larger than Xu Qiao's original bedroom—that moment of relief is so human, so perfectly observed. The author understands that worldbuilding isn't just about describing places; it's about showing how characters move through them, how they claim space, how they're displaced. The student council recruitment scene at Luosi Xueyuan introduces a new environment with economy and precision. The printed application forms, the one-inch photos, the tension between the two staff members—one rigid, one sympathetic—creates a microcosm of the institutional world Xu Rou is trying to infiltrate. And Song Zhiyu's absence, felt rather than seen, makes him more present than any physical description ever could. The biology research lab, the Song residence, the student council—these three locations form a triangle of his world, and Xu Rou can only access one vertex.
