The text specifically notes she was 'dressed in plain white mourning clothes' and 'looked starkly out of place among the brilliantly dressed women of the Xiao family.' This isn't just visual contrast—it's thematic. While the Xiao family is celebrating Xiao Rang's promotion and the imperial decree, Cui Anru is still in mourning for her father and brother. The white represents her grief, her loyalty to her blood family, and her refusal to participate in the family's celebration of the man who betrayed her. The 'brilliantly dressed' women represent everything she's being asked to accept: complicity, celebration of hollow merit, and the erasure of her dead family's sacrifice. Then there's the concept of 'military merit' (军功) itself. Xiao Rang 'used his military merit to request an Equal Wife.' The Emperor grants this as a 'precedent for this dynasty.' But the text also reveals that this same military merit could have 'earned a noble title for his wife.' So the merit is being redirected—from honoring Cui Anru's family's sacrifice to elevating Lin Zhiyin's status. It's a theft of recognition. The father and brother died for the empire, their merit should have elevated their family, but instead it's being used to bring a mistress into the home. The pregnancy pulse is also symbolic. The child is conceived 'on the way back' with the coffins of Cui Anru's father and brother. Life and death occupying the same space. The new life growing in Lin Zhiyin's womb is built on the foundation of Cui Anru's family's deaths. It's almost mythological in its cruelty. And the street scene—the abandoned woman and child, the man who 'earned merit and wanted to marry his childhood sweetheart'—this is the theme on a societal level. The system that rewards military merit also enables the destruction of families. Cui Anru isn't just fighting one bad husband; she's fighting a structure that treats women as expendable. The dowry is another symbol. 'For the past two years, the Xiao family had been spending Cui Anru's money.' Her wealth, her family's wealth, has been sustaining the very people who are now discarding her. When she cuts off the financial support, she's not just being practical—she's reclaiming the material foundation of her independence. I keep thinking about that line: 'We may not have justice on our side, but we have guilt.' The Emperor's guilt. The state's guilt. The system's guilt. Cui Anru understands that justice is not the same as leverage, and she's about to weaponize the latter.
I've been reading the raw scans on Ridibooks, and I'm eagerly awaiting the chapters to catch up since I simultaneously read the translated version and the raws to ensure I don't miss any details. It would be beneficial to read Translator Xuexxi's review and synopsis first to understand the storyline and characters, as I'll mainly focus on what I enjoy about the novel.
The setting is fascinating – a world mostly submerged, where continents float due to the mythical powers of the Hwa clan, who control vegetation. The world-building is paced beautifully, gradually revealing details throughout each chapter to create a vivid picture of the story's backdrop.
Gong Tae Muwon, though occasionally annoying as mentioned by the translator, isn't completely heartless towards Su Cheongyeon. Their interactions are delightful, showcasing the complexity of their characters. Cheongyeon is a grounded character with a clear goal, exhibiting a bit of cunning in his rebellious yet cute ways. Muwon, on the other hand, is a passionate flower lover and second-in-command of the pirate ship controlling Cheonghwa Town, where Cheongyeon resides. The connection between them becomes increasingly apparent, hinting at an intriguing fate.
As a spoiler, they briefly met as children, but it's unclear if they remember each other.
What I appreciate about this story is its unpredictability; the plot keeps me guessing, and the weekly release of four chapters barely scratches the surface of the intrigue.
The supporting characters are charming and endearing, adding comic relief amidst the intense moments. Each character is well-developed, making the story come alive, with my favorites being the Planets, who each possess unique personalities. Despite being set in a fantasy realm, the world feels authentic and immersive.
The balance between plot and romance is commendable; neither aspect dominates, and the progression of both is seamless. The romantic development gives readers palpitations.
Key elements include a sexy pirate, a graceful apothecary, whales, lobsters, 20,000 hwan, lotus flower tea, and even albinism.
I truly hope more people discover this gem so we can collectively express our feelings towards Muwon and cheer on Cheongyeon, as discussing the story in the comments section becomes a full-time activity.
This novel has turned out to be highly entertaining, featuring a protagonist with limited physical prowess who triumphs through strategic thinking, much like the character Ainz from Overlord, who constantly finds creative solutions to challenges. The occasional fanservice moments,尽管适度, contribute significantly to the overall enjoyment. I am eagerly anticipating more chapters to unfold.

It's her, it was translated from Chinese and pronouns when it comes to Divinity is weird, it's always with a neutral pronoun, there's no question of feminine and masculine here, but it's neutral. But yes, it is HER, since they say Mother of the Gods and is practically the World Tree.
