Can we just appreciate the absolute disaster that is Gu Ningxi's dialogue in this chapter? She runs into Prince Zhao — the man from her traumatic dream — and her brain short-circuits. Her greeting: "Y-Your Highness, where have you come from?" Not "Your Highness." Not even a proper "Good evening, Your Highness." She stammers and asks him where he's been, which is such a weird thing to say to a prince you barely know. It's the kind of line that would be comedy in a different novel, but here it's devastating because we know exactly what's happening inside her head. She's remembering dream-sequences of intimate violence and her first instinct is to ask about his itinerary. Meanwhile Prince Zhao's response is character-perfect: "Wangyun Tower." Brief. Polite. Completely unaware that he just caused a minor internal crisis. And Xie Qian? The text says he found the whole exchange "utterly bewildered" and "pondered it repeatedly but could not discern any deeper meaning." Of course he couldn't. He's watching a woman have a full psychological breakdown while maintaining the most basic surface politeness, and he has no framework for understanding it. The dialogue throughout these chapters has this wonderful double-layer quality. On the surface, everyone is speaking the formal, measured language of court intrigue — "Your Highness," "I understand, Father," "Thank you for your concern." But underneath, every conversation is carrying enormous unspoken weight. Gu Ningxi's conversation with her mother about work when she's actually hiding dream-analysis notes. The Emperor and Prince Zhao playing chess while the succession struggle simmers. Even the casual property-buying discussion between cousins carries the weight of family survival. The author never lets the dialogue settle into just what's being said — it's always about what's being avoided.
Okay so let me just say—this opening is absolutely wild. The danmaku commentary? I literally screamed. The way the narrative keeps layering itself: Liu Ming has a nightmare about the world ending, then he wakes up and sees floating text telling him he's the protagonist in a story that's already been written? That's not just a gimmick, that's a whole structural choice that changes how you read everything that follows. The plot moves fast but not recklessly. We get the apocalypse dream, the danmaku reveal, the hospital scene, the midnight ride to Can He Courtyard, and then—BAM—the grandfather stabbing himself with golden threads everywhere. All in seven chapters. And somehow it doesn't feel rushed because every beat lands with emotional weight. What really sold me is the twist on the twist. You think Liu Lin is the wise mentor handing the hero a magical ring? Nope. He literally says 'after tonight, even I will be your enemy' and shoves him out the door. That's not a setup for a bonding moment—that's a setup for war between grandfather and grandson. And the system voice at the end? 'Welcome to the World Regulation Bureau Service System'—it shifts from cold robot to something playful, like it's possessed by another entity. I have so many questions. >The world was ending. That opening line haunts me. It's simple, blunt, and then the danmaku immediately undercuts it by calling it 'Round One' and mentioning a 'second round.' So the apocalypse isn't even the end of the story—it's just the tutorial level. The stakes just doubled in my head and I'm already hooked.
