I like this story. The begning of the story is Very captiving. I would like to give five stars.
I have to give credit where it's due—the narrative voice in this book is genuinely fun. Gu Shiyi's internal monologue doesn't sound like a generic transmigration protagonist. It sounds like a modern person who happens to be a devoted fan of farming novels, and that self-awareness comes through in every thought. Take this line: "Could it be… Had she transmigrated? Gu Shiyi's eyes widened in disbelief, filled with shock and resistance. This kind of thing only happened in novels—yet it had actually happened to her. The chances were even lower than winning a huge lottery jackpot!" That's not just exposition. That's a voice. She's processing her situation through the lens of someone who has read about this exact scenario a hundred times, and that meta-awareness creates this wonderful layer of humor and relatability. She's not just surviving—she's narrating her own survival like a novel she's already read. And then there's the darker humor. When she's limping through the forest with a sprained ankle and muttering about her bad luck, or when she's singing that poisonous mushroom song while gathering hawthorns—"Red caps and white stems—eat them and we'll all lie down together"—the author lets the narrative breathe with this casual, almost flippant tone that makes Gu Shiyi feel like a real person rather than a plot device. The dialogue between Gu Shiyi and the dogs is also surprisingly effective. Even though the dogs can't speak, the author communicates their thoughts through actions and sounds in a way that never feels cartoonish. When Ah Hui barks in response to a command, or when Ah Hua whimpers like she's crying, it's written with enough restraint to feel grounded. One thing I'd love to see more of is actual spoken dialogue with other characters. So far it's almost entirely internal monologue and narration. I'm curious how the voice will shift when Gu Shiyi starts interacting with people in the village or elsewhere. Will she code-switch between her modern internal voice and the formal speech required in this ancient setting? That could be really interesting to watch.
