I wish I could vote for this novel. I am really enjoying it
I need to talk about the sensory writing in this chapter because it is absolutely elite. The moment you step into the Four Seasons Eatery, you can SMELL it. The bone-broth aroma with hints of tangerine peel and wolfberry—warm, gentle, non-intrusive. And then the author explicitly contrasts it with "the choking, oily smoke he had smelled on East Street." That single line tells you everything about the difference between this tiny alley restaurant and the fancy establishments on the main street. It's not just atmosphere, it's class commentary disguised as cooking descriptions. And the young master's perspective is where the worldbuilding really shines. He walks into this narrow alley, sees the low eaves, the simple boy chopping wood, the four tables and bench stools—and instead of being disgusted, his nose does this thing where it just… accepts it. "This is the place." Two words. That's it. After all that fussing about Zui Xian Lou having private rooms and excellent tea, he finds peace in a hole-in-the-wall because the air smells right. The author understands that atmosphere isn't just decoration—it's emotional truth. Then you cut to the Chen Family Restaurant's back courtyard: "Several large carts covered in oilcloth glided silently from the direction of the canal pier, one after another." The oilcloth, the silence, the bent posture of Manager Zhou. You don't need to be told they're smuggling. The scene tells you. And the carrier pigeon streaking across the ward walls toward the North City? Cinematic. Absolute cinema. The world feels lived-in, dangerous, and alive in a way that most novels never achieve.
