I love this story line and I hope Blake and Jesica back together

The river scene in these chapters is honestly so vivid I could feel the damp grass and hear the water. The author doesn't spend a ton of words on description but every detail lands. The river having 'at least one and a half meters of shallow water along the edge' became a crucial plot point—Li Hao using his dry pants and shoes as evidence that he never entered the water. That's worldbuilding that serves the story, not just decoration. But what really makes the setting come alive is the village atmosphere. The older women pressing Wu Laidi's swollen neck, the poor-eyed auntie who found it 'kind of fun to poke'—these tiny details paint a picture of a close-knit rural community where everyone knows everyone's business. The educated youth dormitory being locked, the grain distribution being common knowledge, the fact that 'everyone in the village roughly knew how much grain each educated youth received'—all of this builds a world that feels lived-in and real. The scene transitions are also worth noting. You go from the tense river rescue to the chaotic public confrontation to the almost comedic aftermath where villagers are basically treating Shen Jiandang and Zhao Xiaomei's romance like a spectator sport. The team leader's arrival with the grain investigation adds another layer—showing that while the personal drama plays out, there are institutional consequences looming. The world feels like it operates on multiple levels simultaneously, and that's what makes it so immersive.

It says 31 chapters but I only was able to read 29. I hope there’s more and I didn’t just waste my time and money on a book that didn’t even get to her being actually caged. The preview sounded so good and none of that happened in the chapters I read.
