But the author makes it feel like a courtroom drama. "In the main hall, over a dozen servants and maids stood in two rows on either side. The scene was almost like a courtroom interrogation of criminals." That comparison alone transforms what could be dry financial stuff into TENSION. You're waiting for someone to crack. And they do — Steward Liang goes first, then the rest follow like dominoes. The abacus bead moment is genius pacing. "As she spoke, she casually flicked an abacus bead. The crisp sound of the bead colliding echoed clearly in the silent main hall. That small noise seemed to be the final straw that broke the stewards' resolve." ONE SOUND. That's all it takes. The author doesn't need yelling or threats — just a single bead clicking against another bead, and the whole room collapses. That's how you build tension without raising your voice. Then — BAM — midnight whistle. The transition from the main hall to the blood-soaked courtyard of Songfeng Yuan is so sudden it made me jump. One moment she's locking up account books, the next she's hearing that sharp whistle and running through the dark. The fight scene itself is paced perfectly too. It starts with Yu Xiuzhu almost dying (personal stakes), then Yu Sheng enters like a deity (spectacle), then the iron cage drops (relief), then A-Mo appears on the wall (mystery), then the Shizi's guards reveal themselves (complication), and then it ends with the chapter CUTTING OFF mid-swing. The author knows exactly when to speed up and when to slow down. The account scene is slow and methodical — matching Yu Sheng's personality. The fight is fast and chaotic — matching the danger. And that cliffhanger ending? Unforgivable. I had to read Chapter 16 immediately. This is how you control reader engagement. Not with explosions every page, but with the RIGHT explosion at the RIGHT moment.
Ye Shuwei's dialogue is so bad it's good. Like, the author wrote her as this character who thinks she's being subtle but is absolutely not, and I couldn't stop reading her lines. Her greasy 'You're back' when she sees Lu Yunzheng? The text literally says Lin Tingwan got goosebumps and thought 'Oh my goodness, can this damn guy say hello before speaking?' And then Ye Shuwei continues with 'I am Zizhou and Zihang's teacher, Captain Lu, don't you remember me?' while lowering her eyes and biting her lip like she's in some cheap drama. She's performing femininity the way someone performs surgery—with terrible technique and zero self-awareness. But the real dialogue masterpiece is Lu Zihang crying 'Teacher Ye, will uncle abandon us?' while holding a lunch box of dumplings. This child is six years old and he's already been programmed to fear abandonment. And Ye Shuwei's response? 'Your uncle naturally wouldn't, but...' She doesn't even finish the sentence. She just lets the poison hang in the air and watches the kid fall apart. Meanwhile Lu Yunzheng's dialogue is barely three words most of the time. 'Who are you? Why are you in my house?!' That's it. No fancy rhetoric, no dramatic speech. Just cold, direct dismissal. The contrast between his minimalism and her performative sweetness is the author's way of telling us everything we need to know about who these people are.
This entire passage is obsessed with the question: what makes a family? The Zhou family has blood ties but zero love. Gu Ruanci has no blood relation to the Gu family but they're the ones who protect her, celebrate her, see her for who she is. The name change from Zhou Qingran to Gu Ruanci isn't just cosmetic—it's a complete reclamation of identity. When the Empress says "there is only Gu Ruanci now, no Zhou Qingran," she's articulating the central theme: family isn't about biology, it's about who shows up for you. The memorial tablet at Xuandi Guan is another powerful symbol—Ye Hesheng, her birth mother, finally at peace, while her biological father and siblings treat her like an enemy. The temple itself becomes a kind of secular sanctuary, a place where the old hierarchies don't apply. Qingtuan Daozhang doesn't care about her status—he cares about her character. "The departed, freed from suffering, surely wish for your happiness as well"—this line carries so much weight. It's about letting go, about finding peace on your own terms. And then there's the Little Medical Immortal, this mysterious figure who hasn't even appeared yet but already controls the entire narrative. The Zhou family is desperate to win her favor, to use her as another tool in their scheme. But she's operating on a completely different moral plane. The recurring motif of "face" and public perception drives everything—the Renqin Yan scheduled on the same day as Qinzhu's ceremony, the gossip spreading through Dizhou, the careful performances everyone puts on. But the text keeps reminding us that none of it matters when you strip away the pretense. What's left? The Zhou family is hollow. Gu Ruanci is whole.
Is my first time reading cultivation novel and I enjoyed it. First things first the Character was perfectly formulated. I haven't finished reading the whole update but, I already have fun! Every character has a unique treat's and I like it, a lot! Thank you, for this author. To more ink!
