This opening is a masterclass in raising stakes quickly. We go from a routine military search operation to 'your wife is being trafficked' in the span of a few paragraphs, and I was hooked immediately. The external conflict is clear and urgent: human traffickers have kidnapped Yu Lixia, and every minute counts. But what makes this work is that the author layers multiple conflicts on top of each other. There's the immediate rescue mission, the ongoing military operation Bai Dingting is conducting, the suspicious behavior of Yu Qingqiu, and the mystery of why the traffickers were targeting this specific family. Internally, Bai Li is dealing with her own limitations. She's a powerful beast spirit, but her current body can't fully access her abilities. Her sense of smell is degraded, her spatial dimension is inaccessible, and she has to rely on instinct and quick thinking. This creates a really compelling tension—she knows she should be able to handle this, but she's constrained in ways that make her vulnerable. The scene at the three-way fork is where all these conflicts converge beautifully. Bai Li can't use her powers, she can only trust her intuition, and her father has to decide whether to follow a three-year-old's instinct or stick to protocol. The author makes you feel the weight of that decision. And then there's the cliffhanger—the scream from the next room, the woman crying 'Give me back my Li Li!' The stakes just went from 'we need to find her' to 'she's in immediate danger and we're running out of time.' I genuinely cannot wait to see what happens next.

The pacing in these chapters is absolutely masterful. It starts in a public space — the street, the jewelry shop, the crowd of noble ladies — and slowly narrows down to increasingly intimate and dangerous spaces. First the public square where Gu Nanyin exposes the truth, then the jewelry shop for a brief moment of warmth, then Gu Qinglian storming into Gu Nanyin's private courtyard. The author controls tension like a pro. That moment when Liu Wan'er realizes Gu Qinglian manipulated her — the chill running down her spine, the face flushing red then pale — that's a mini climax within the larger scene. You can feel the ground shifting under her feet. Then there's the transition to the gossip spreading through the capital. This isn't just exposition — it's the author showing us the consequences of Gu Nanyin's actions rippling outward. The storytellers adding different versions is almost comedic relief, but it serves a purpose: it shows that Gu Nanyin has won this battle completely. But then Gu Qinglian appears at the end, and the pacing SLAMS back into high gear. No warning. She just storms in, kicks a maid, and threatens Gu Nanyin. The chapter ends on "It's not yet certain who will emerge victorious" and I was immediately clicking to the next one. The author knows exactly when to pull the rug out from under you.
