Let's talk stakes because this is NOT a story where the protagonist can afford to slip up. Wen Yan is a woman disguised as a man preparing for the imperial exams, and the text literally says: "If this is discovered, it's a beheading offense." Beheading. That's not a casual threat—that's the highest possible stake in this world, and the author doesn't let us forget it. But the conflict isn't just external. There's this incredible internal tension every time Wen Yan has to interact with Fu Zheng. She just spent the night with him—well, technically he spent the night with her, but the ambiguity is part of the tension—and now she has to sit across from him in his study and ask about academic matters like nothing happened. The dramatic irony is suffocating in the best way. Every time her mother mentions Fu Zheng, the stakes feel like they're rising. "Wen Yan's heart sank with a heavy thud"—that's not just nervousness, that's the weight of a secret that could destroy everything. And what does she stand to lose? Her brother's dream, her family's hopes, her own future. If she fails the exams, she's back to being invisible. If she's discovered, she's dead. The pressure is relentless and the author maintains it masterfully by constantly reminding us of what's at stake through small details—the mother's worried face, the mention of the beheading offense, the trembling hand when the jade pendant falls into the water. The suspense is tight because we know something the other characters don't. We know about the pond. We know about the pendant. And we're waiting for the moment when that secret comes crashing into the daylight.

100 percent nice novel
Such a good book. I loved the character development throughout the book the most.
I loved this book, and would highly recommend it (it is a bit dark though but it has nice character development). I can't help but feeling that the ending was a bit rushed. Would have liked a few more chapters on his journey. The author has a great writing style though.
