Let me just say this first: the dialogue in this section is sharp, funny, and each character has a distinctly different voice. You can tell who's speaking without reading the tags. He Qinrui, the pink-haired playboy cousin, is pure comedy gold. "Here to hit on me? Sorry, I'm not interested in high school twigs." And then Xu Zhizhi trips and falls into Fu Chengyan instead and he's just sitting there going "……" The deadpan delivery of that moment is perfect. He thought he was doing her a favor by pointing her toward an easy target and she completely bypassed him for the biggest shot in the room. Fu Chengyan's dialogue is another level entirely. "Throwing yourself at me?" — said while he's the one who pulled her onto his lap. "Had enough of sitting? Any longer and I'll have to charge you." — absolutely shameless, and his friends are losing their minds. "Who was that peacock-strutting playboy just now? In short: Who was that shameless jerk just now?" The internal monologue of his friends narrating his behavior is hilarious. And the contrast with Xu Zhizhi's silence! When she can't speak and starts gesturing wildly, the text says: "Not only did the man fall silent, but the other men in the booth also quieted down. Who would have thought such a pretty girl was mute? What a shame." This is Fu Chengyan's perspective, and it's interesting because he doesn't mock her—he's genuinely curious. "So you're a little mute." He says it teasingly, not cruelly. And then he helps her up instead of keeping her there. Lin Xitang's voice is also distinct—practical, slightly exasperated, the responsible friend. "Besides her own doghouse, have you ever seen her sleep anywhere else?" This line tells us everything we need to know about their friendship and Xu Zhizhi's quirks in one sentence. The narrative voice itself is witty and observant, with occasional dry asides that feel like the narrator is sitting next to you commenting on the story. "No wonder it looked so… round, so bulky. There was a reason for it." The security guard's internal monologue about her giant pockets is the kind of detail that makes the prose feel alive.
This is great. I love every bit of it. The writing, the plot- every single thing.
This was a good storyline. But hands down THE WORST ENDING EVER. It honestly kinda makes me wish I would've never continued and finished the book. I guarantee if the ending would've been positive I would've done 5-stars. Extremely disappointed in the ending.
