Xu Zhizhi is a twenty-year-old reclusive web novelist living alone in Shengjing. Orphaned effectively by her parents' fraudulent arranged marriage, she was abandoned by both families after a blood test revealed she was not their biological child. Raised in isolation, she developed severe social anxiety and a habit of sleeping in a custom-made dog bed for security. Her only anchors to the outside world are her childhood friends, Lin Xitang, a medical student, and Zhou Che, Lin's boyfriend. Lin is preparing to leave for a two-year exchange program at the University of Hong Kong, leaving Xu Zhizhi to navigate her solitary life without her primary caregiver.
During a dinner outing with Lin and Zhou Che, the group visits a high-end bar owned by Zhou Che's cousin, He Qinrui. Overwhelmed by the noisy environment, Xu Zhizhi retreats to a corner. When a game of Truth or Dare forces her to interact with strangers, she is tasked with approaching an unfamiliar male. She stumbles intentionally into the arms of Fu Chengyan, a wealthy, sharp-tongued heir who recently returned from abroad to take over his family's business. Despite her panic, Fu Chengyan finds her timid, mute behavior intriguing and attempts to connect with her, but Xu Zhizhi, terrified and confused, flees the scene.
Back home, Xu Zhizhi blocks Fu Chengyan on all platforms, viewing him as a threat. However, Fu Chengyan is determined. He uses surveillance footage to identify her and learns her identity as a successful author. After reading one of her tragic novels, he attempts to contact her through her online profile to discuss copyright adaptation. When she ignores him, he discovers her phone number and sends a message. Xu Zhizhi, recalling Lin's warnings about online predators, blocks him again. The conflict escalates when Fu Chengyan decides to intercept her food delivery personally. He waits outside her apartment complex and, when she mistakes him for a criminal in the dark, he chases her down. She trips in the bushes, and he helps her up, eventually gaining entry to her apartment when she invites him in to retrieve her forgotten phone.
Inside, Xu Zhizhi's naive nature becomes apparent. She offers him her slippers and allows him to cook for her, unaware of the danger she is in. Fu Chengyan cooks a simple mushroom and fish ball soup, which she eats eagerly. In exchange for the meal, she unblocks him on WeChat. Their dynamic shifts as Fu Chengyan begins to visit regularly, bringing food and navigating her social anxiety with patience. He learns that her muteness is psychosomatic, stemming from trauma and selective mutism rather than a physical condition. Meanwhile, Lin Xitang departs for Hong Kong, increasing Xu Zhizhi's dependence on Fu Chengyan's unexpected presence.
The story follows the gradual thawing of Xu Zhizhi's isolation. Fu Chengyan, initially intrigued by her mystery, becomes genuinely invested in her well-being. He respects her boundaries while slowly integrating himself into her routine. Xu Zhizhi, though still fearful of the outside world, begins to accept his assistance, finding comfort in his consistent, non-judgmental companionship. The narrative explores the contrast between her sheltered, writer-filled existence and Fu Chengyan's powerful, public life, setting the stage for a relationship built on mutual understanding and the healing of past wounds.
