"It's Not Easy to Be Poor"—what a chapter title. What a perfect, devastating chapter title. The author starts with this domestic comedy energy. Wen Zhi packing, the landlady making jokes, Mo Tingyan being a nuisance on the balcony. It's light, it's funny, it's 'oh this is just a cute cohabitation story.' And then—BAM. The livestream scene hits and the whole tone shifts. Suddenly we're in territory where a woman is trying to do her job while her husband-of-convenience is basically torturing her with affection. The pacing here is masterful because the comedy and the tension are running on parallel tracks. Then comes the dishwasher argument and the chapter title reveals itself. 'We have over two million in mortgage debt on this house. Don't you feel any pressure?' And Mo Tingyan, who was ready to buy a dishwasher, is suddenly confronted with the reality that his carefree attitude doesn't match their situation. 'For the first time, Mo Tingyan felt he had miscalculated. Being poor wasn't easy!' I literally laughed out loud. The man is a millionaire pretending not to understand financial responsibility. The transition from the argument to the three-day time skip is where the pacing really shines. We go from this domestic squabble to 'they didn't see each other for three consecutive days' and suddenly the sexual tension has nowhere to go but inward. When she walks through that door, the release is immediate and almost violent in its intensity. The author doesn't waste a single word on setup—we're right there in the passion. And then Mo Tingjue calls. Of course he calls. Just when you think the chapter is going to be all romantic payoff, the author yanks the rug out again. The structure here is basically: comedy → tension → comedy → drama → romance → drama. It's chaotic and exhausting and I couldn't put it down. The only thing I'd question is whether the livestream scene goes on a beat too long. I get that it's building tension, but I was simultaneously rootiing for Wen Zhi and dying of secondhand embarrassment. Still, it works because the humor keeps it from getting suffocating.
A great book
An incredibly amazing book! I'm thankful for how well written it was and how much like life it portrayed. Bringing God and prayer into the story was a wonderful surprise, all the while it still had incredible romance and spice.
