Okay so I need to talk about this weird trio dynamic because it is SO good. Zhao Xin, Cao Ping, and Liang He — on the surface they're just two young masters and their guard, right? But the way the author layers their relationships is chef's kiss. Zhao Xin is the obvious center of gravity here. He's this reincarnated soul playing the role of a pampered noble kid, but every single action he takes reveals how far from naive he actually is. When he plucks weeds from that little girl's hair and then whips them at Granny Yang's face — that's not a child's move. That's calculated. He's asserting dominance while also making a statement. And the way he explains usury and contracts to Cao Ping like he's giving a lecture? Cao Ping's reaction — eyes sparkling, near-admiration — tells you everything about how Zhao Xin has already shifted the power dynamic in this group. Liang He is the funniest one though. He's this tough military guy who went through HELL to get this assignment, rehearsed his lines in his head, and then immediately loses it when a random woman grabs Cao Ping's leg. His threat to knock out her teeth and strip her naked — then he realizes Cao Ping and Zhao Xin are watching, and suddenly he's doing damage control. The internal monologue where he thinks "This is about the only skill I have that's presentable. You're making me look utterly useless" had me wheezing. He's competent at violence but completely outclassed by a kid when it comes to actual street smarts. And Cao Ping — oh, Cao Ping. He's the straight man in this comedy trio. He notices things. Like when Granny Yang's right arm hangs limply and he frowns in disapproval but holds back because Zhao Xin hasn't spoken. That's a kid who's learning to read power dynamics in real time. He's not naive, he's just... sheltered. And the way he looks at Zhao Xin like the boy is some kind of prodigy? That's going to develop into something interesting. The most telling moment for me was when Zhao Xin finishes his plum drink, blows into the bowl to create bubbles, and then casually dismantles Granny Yang's entire scheme. Liang He drags her out of the alley like garbage — not a speck of mud splashes on Zhao Xin. That level of consideration from a guard toward a young master shows how much Liang He respects him now, even if he's also intimidated.
