This chapter is a masterclass in slow-burn tension disguised as a slice-of-life episode. On the surface, nothing happens. They go to a supermarket. They eat lunch. They talk about a fancy hotel. But underneath, every single interaction is a power play. Su Tang asking to tag along with Sang Ji instead of Liang Shiyu? That's a shift in alliance. Liang Shiyu volunteering to cook? That's a desperate grab for relevance after her gentle approach failed with Su Tang. The Shen siblings' visible annoyance at having to share mealtime with "extra people"? That's the original plan falling apart. And Sang Ji's internal monologue about Shen Ci choosing acting despite hating social interaction—"Perhaps their tragic endings in the book were partly her fault"—that's the plot hinting at something much darker underneath this variety show veneer. The author is basically saying: you think this is just a cozy island getaway? No. Everyone here is performing, everyone has an agenda, and the original story is about to go sideways. The fact that Cheng Yu mentions Lanjing Hotel and Liang Shiyu immediately seizes the opportunity to probe Sang Ji feels like the inciting incident for the next major conflict. Something's coming. I can feel it.
So here's what I noticed about the pacing in these chapters and honestly it's really well calibrated. The author starts with the Xu Xiucai confrontation — big, loud, public, cathartic. Yu Banxia shuts him down in front of the whole village. 'I, Yu Banxia, have nothing to do with you, Xu Xiucai!' Boom. Done. The crowd is satisfied. Then — and this is the clever part — the author IMMEDIATELY pivots to the domestic scene. The pig-slaughtering feast, the cooking, the family banter. It's like exhaling after holding your breath. You get to relax, enjoy the meat, watch Fusheng being a cute ambitious nephew, and then WHAM — cut to Xiaoxu Village and the mother-son scheme. The tonal whiplash is intentional. The reader goes from 'YESSS SISTER' to 'oh hell no they are actually doing this' in the span of a few paragraphs. And then it cuts back AGAIN to the warm family scene with the bathing and the siblings helping each other. Fusheng carrying water, Yu Mancang fetching warm water for his sister — these small domestic beats give you breathing room before the next tension spike. The chapter structure itself is interesting too. Chapter 8 is basically the aftermath and the family settling in. Chapter 9 starts with the antagonists plotting and then moves to Yu Banxia taking ACTION — going to her uncle to commission a wheelchair. She's not just reacting anymore. She's one step ahead, using the Master Qian situation as leverage to cut ties completely. The pacing never lets you get comfortable. Every time you settle into a warm family moment, the narrative reminds you that the antagonists are still out there scheming. But here's the thing that keeps me engaged — the story never feels rushed despite all these shifts. The transitions are smooth because they're grounded in character motivation. Yu Banxia goes to her uncle because she needs to solve the Master Qian problem. The mother-son scene exists because we need to see the threat escalate. It's all connected. The only moment that felt slightly slow was the bathing sequence — not bad, just... functional. But honestly, that's probably intentional. It's the calm before the storm.
This book has my crying, specially with what happend with that character that we love. on my way to the next. Author you got a fan in me, this is my third story
