I need to talk about Lin Tingjun because this guy is fascinating and I think the author is doing something really clever with him. On the surface, he's the aloof, cold, busy-studying type. He refuses to help Xu Jingchu with her homework twice. He shuts his door with a sharp bang. He doesn't smile. Classic tsundere energy, right? But then — and this is the thing that got me — he comes back anyway. He walks into her room unannounced, tells her to draw an auxiliary line, and explains three questions in under ten sentences each. And when she smiles at him and says thank you? He can't even handle it and just storms out. But here's what I think is really going on: Lin Tingjun notices things. When he sees her disappointment after he refuses to help, he feels a "sour taste in his mouth." The narrative explicitly says he attributes it to the noodles going bad, but come on. We know better. He's aware of his own feelings and he's actively deflecting. And the scene where he watches her through the crack in her door, studying bent over her desk? That's not indifference. That's someone who cares but doesn't know how to express it. Then there's the dynamic with Qin Yajuan — she's actively trying to poison his perception of Xu Jingchu by spreading rumors about how popular she was back in the village. And Lin Tingjun's reaction? He doesn't engage. He just goes upstairs. But I wonder if her words planted even a tiny seed of doubt. That's the tragedy of their relationship — she's sabotaging it from the outside while he's too proud to admit he's already invested. Also, the Tingyu subplot is adorable. The kid basically bullies his brother into washing dishes and then uses him as a tutor. Lin Tingjun indulges him every time. This is a guy who shows love through actions, not words.
"It was beautiful, like a red plum blossom blooming on a winter branch, only to be beaten down by the wind and snow, fluttering helplessly onto the cold ground." I need a minute. The author just described Xin Ling's blush—her SHAME, her vulnerability, the way she's being forced into something she didn't consent to—and compared it to a flower being destroyed by winter. That is such a specific, aching kind of poetry. It made me feel SO much for this girl in that moment. Xin Ling's emotional state throughout these chapters is devastating. She's trapped between a task she has to complete (replace her fiancé? No, wait, the system says her main task is something else entirely) and a man who holds all the cards. When she pleads "Don't tell him…" about her secret, her voice full of panic, you can feel how much her entire plan hinges on this one thing staying hidden. The CP chemistry with Lu Jinzhi is insane though. There's this scene where he corners her in the corridor after she tries to flee, fixes her hair, and whispers in her ear: "Or has just one or two hours passed and you've already forgotten? Do I need to take you back and refresh your memory properly?" And she's like "N-no need" because her body is still sore. The power dynamic is so toxic and yet the writing makes it so intoxicating to read. But the part that actually made my heart hurt was when Xin Ling goes to meet Lu Ziyao at the club. She's wearing covered-up clothes because of Lu Jinzhi's bite marks, and he humiliates her in front of everyone, calling her tacky, making her apologize with a drink. And she just... sits there. Endures it. Because she has a MISSION. The fact that she's swallowing this degradation for something bigger than herself made me want to shake her and hug her at the same time.
Beautiful concepts. I really want to see where this go.
While the idea of a regressed tower climber isn’t anything new. The set up is done well, the characters are interesting, and the abilities are cool. Not to mention I haven’t seen any typos which is honestly rare with newer novels. I rate this novel pretty decently. I’ll stack it for now and read it later.
