I could see this as a film — the restless energy of children before authority arrives. And the details! The festival gifts — zongzi, salted duck eggs, yellow wine, large yellow croaker, a bolt of fine silk, a set of the four treasures of the study. The author doesn't just tell us it's the Dragon Boat Festival, they SHOW us what that looks like in this world through the gifts being exchanged. Then there's the visual of Teacher Xu — "wildly grown eyebrows of uneven lengths" that furrow together so tightly they join into one giant confused brow when he hears the cheating accusation. I literally laughed out loud. That's the kind of specific, vivid detail that makes a world feel alive. The contrast between Xin Jinian's expensive book box — "woven with auspicious patterns from vines and gleaming with a polished luster" — and Fang Yin's plain new robe of fine blue cloth with no embroidery at the collar or hem. These visual details aren't just decoration; they're class signaling. The world feels real because every object tells you something about the person who owns it.
