I have to admit, I was not expecting this book to pull a fast one on me right out of the gate. The transmigration premise is standard fare, sure, but the timing of when Liu Zhiheng arrives is genuinely clever. She shows up right at the moment the original character jumps into the river to force a marriage, which means she gets to rewrite the entire tragic arc from the ground up. If she had arrived even a few days later, she would have already been married into the Xie family and trapped in that ten-year nightmare of abuse and death. The author basically gives her a narrow window of opportunity, and the tension of knowing exactly what fate she is trying to dodge is woven into every scene. What really sold me was the father's departure. Liu Yigu says he will be gone for three months, but the reader who has read the original novel knows he will actually be away for two years. That dramatic irony is delicious. Every time Liu Yigu mentions the short trip, I am sitting there thinking about what is actually going to happen to him. The plot is setting up this incredible arc where the father becomes the wealthiest man in the country, only to be drained dry and die begging on the streets. The Liu family is walking into a trap, and Liu Zhiheng knows it. The engagement breakup strategy is smart too. Instead of just running away, she is trying to navigate this carefully, making sure Xie Tinglan does not hold a grudge. But can she really outsmart a character who is described as having near-demonic intelligence? The story has me hooked because every decision she makes feels like it could either save her family or doom them completely. What happens when she actually confronts him about breaking the engagement?
"I'm practically barefoot now and not afraid of those wearing shoes. Who knows how long I'll survive on this exile journey? If I die, dragging a couple of people down with me would still be a gain." That line. That absolute line. Su Hanchu is not your typical transmigrated protagonist who plays nice. She's got zero filter, zero patience, and a military family background that shows in everything she does. The way she dismantles Chen Siyu in public is chef's kiss. Chen Siyu tries to flex about being made the principal wife and Su Hanchu immediately compares her to a brothel girl. Brutal. And then the whole scene with her own second aunt-in-law—Su Yangshi—who was all sweet and respectful when the family was prosperous but immediately turns venomous the moment trouble hits. Su Hanchu doesn't just call her out, she lists every single benefit the second branch received at the expense of the eldest. "The clothes you're wearing were made from fine fabric you took from my mother"—this is the kind of detail that makes the character feel real. But what really got me is the relationship between Su Hanchu and Jun Moye. At first you think he's just some invalid husband she's stuck with, but then he steps up. Twice. First when he tells his mother "Hanchu is my wife, not an outsider" and then when he physically supports her through the Chen Family confrontation. The moment where he says "In the future, ignore whatever the Chen Family says. Just stay by my side"—that's not just plot convenience, that's genuine character growth for a guy who was probably raised to prioritize family loyalty over his wife. And Su Hanchu noticing this and thinking "Well, since he helped me, I should help him too" before going to apply his medicine—that's how real relationships start. Not with grand declarations but with small reciprocal gestures.
The pacing in this section is actually really clever when you step back and look at it. The author takes us from the most intimate, tender moments—Shaohuai learning to speak, his first birthday preparations—and gradually widens the lens until we're watching a full-blown family power struggle play out at a banquet. Chapter 14 starts with a baby. Just a baby. Making 'Mm-mm' sounds at his father, stealing books, being adorable. The pacing is slow, warm, almost lullaby-like. You could read this and think it's a domestic slice-of-life story. And then Lin Shiyun arrives and suddenly we're getting a full economic and social backstory about the Lin family's rise from cloth shop to substantial merchant house. The author uses the uncle's visit as an excuse to dump exposition, but it works because it's delivered through family conversation, not narration. Then Chapter 15 hits us with the birthday ceremony itself—the guests, the titles, the slow realization that someone important isn't coming. The pacing here is deliberate. The author makes us wait alongside the characters. 'Wait another fifteen minutes,' the old count says. We wait. The carriages arrive. And with each arrival, the social dynamics become clearer and more painful. The transition to Ruolian's coming-of-age setup at the end of Chapter 15 and into Chapter 16 is where the pacing really shifts. We go from celebration to calculation in two paragraphs. The countess's 'entrustment' to Lin Shi lands like a punch after all that warmth. And that ending—Nurse Shen whispering 'this is a foolish task'—perfect cliffhanger. The author knows exactly when to cut.

I love the concept.And the story is very well thought throught out.The world building the crafting. if feels refresshing to read.The power scaling however can be confusing at times.But if you are looking for a good sci-fi novel this is the one.
