I need to talk about the handkerchief. Just the handkerchief. Xie Xixiao wipes his bloody hands on it, tosses it aside like it's trash, and Hu Shen picks it up thinking, "Do you know how precious handkerchiefs are?" She saves it to wash when it snows because in winter the river freezes and water is precious. A handkerchief. A single, blood-stained handkerchief becomes this tiny artifact of care between two people who can't communicate save through objects and silence. And then later, at the feast, she's sitting next to him remembering how she once fed him by hand when he was chained. The intimacy of it—brushing his lips, touching his tongue—and she only realizes NOW what that moment meant. "An intimacy perhaps only shared between spouses like Zhuo Li and her husband." Zhuo Li's scene right before this is what killed me. Her husband comes home, cups her face, kisses her, and she pretends to be disgusted but her face goes red. Hu Shen watches this and feels "a vague, indescribable ripple stirred in her heart." She's comparing Xie Xixiao's dry, restrained lips to this man's warm, peeling ones. She's thinking about kissing. With XIE XIXIAO. While he's sitting three feet away trying not to look at her. The author doesn't write romance. The author writes tension so thick you could spread it on bread. Every almost-touch, every misunderstood kindness, every time Xie Xixiao opens his mouth to say something cruel and it comes out sounding like something else entirely. Hu Shen sleeps peacefully while he lies awake wondering why she can sleep at all. She thinks he's looking out for her; he's actually seething because she doesn't understand that he's suffering. I'm not okay. I need a moment.
looking forward to Leon and Sia's love story
The story got very interesting. But it's not complete yet. I'm wondering if evil "A" will strike back soon. She really needs to be dealt with. No redemption for her. She really is an atrocious person.
