This isn't background flavor — this is the economic reality these characters navigate every single day. The fact that each household gets exactly one hen tells you everything about scarcity. Then there's the wedding candy scene: 'Now that you've received your marriage certificate, you can purchase wedding candy. You don't need ration coupons for up to two jin. It's a special benefit for newlyweds.' The staff member kindly reminding them — this small moment of bureaucratic warmth is so specific to the era. And Ye Qinglan offering fruit candies to the staff member in return? That's social navigation 101. The state-owned restaurant with its long lunch queue, the military-green wedding suit that doubles as everyday wear, the war films at the movie theater, the supply and marketing cooperative. Every scene is anchored in a world that feels fully realized. The coastal Jiangsu military base with its typhoons and seafood-gathering shorelines is introduced almost casually but it paints such a vivid picture of their future life. I can literally see Ye Qinglan's face lighting up at the prospect of gathering seafood. The worldbuilding here is invisible — you don't notice it until you realize you've been transported somewhere entirely.
