I like this book, but three chapters a dad really stinks
Let me just say this: the conflict in this text operates on three levels and they all escalate simultaneously and I was gripping my phone like this was real life. Level one: He Zheng vs. the entertainment industry. He's an extra getting slapped for real, called worthless, told to get out. The stakes are his career, his dignity, his survival. Level two: He Zheng vs. his own trauma. The dream sequence proves this isn't just about today—it's about eight years of accumulated humiliation that never got processed. Every slap on set reopens every wound from every banquet where nobody saved him a seat. Level three: He Zheng vs. the Top Supporter. And this is the most dangerous conflict because it's the one he can't see coming. Li Ru warns him about the sugar daddy angle, about career ruin, about not being able to read people through a screen. But the real conflict isn't whether the Top Supporter is a scammer or not. It's whether He Zheng can let someone care about him without interpreting it as a trap. The Top Supporter asked for his WeChat. He Zheng gave it to him. He knew from the beginning. And now that he's actually getting to know this person—the one who stays when the room is empty and fades into the crowd when it gets lively—he's the one pulling away. The highest stakes moment isn't the slap. It's the phone call after the slap. The Top Supporter says I won't bother you anymore and He Zheng's mind is a tangled mess and he throws the phone. That's the moment everything could change, and he chooses fear. The conflict isn't resolved. It's just getting started.
