The dialogue in this section is doing some incredible work and I want to focus on how each character's voice is distinct. Qingyan's dialogue is minimal but every line lands. When she says 'Auntie, let's eat together' after Zeng Yumei keeps piling food in her bowl, it's not just polite—it's a woman who knows what it means to be excluded from meals and refuses to let that happen in her new home. The subtext is massive for three words. Chen Xiaomeng's dialogue is performative from start to finish. 'Brother Runsheng, I'm not Qiao Qingyan! Look carefully! I'm Chen Xiaomeng. I'm your wife.' She's trying so hard to assert her identity and it's desperate and pathetic and you can't look away. The way she shifts from coquettish to furious in the span of two sentences shows exactly how unstable her position is. But the real masterpiece is Jinye's conversation with his mother. It's so sparse and so loaded. 'I don't like the woman inside.' 'Is there already a girl you like?' 'Yes.' 'Who is she?' ...silence. He won't even say the name. That silence is louder than any dialogue could be. The author trusts the reader to sit with that refusal and it's brilliant. Zeng Yumei's voice is warm and sharp in equal measure. 'You ungrateful boy!' followed by the softer 'Mom... don't be angry' from Jinye—that's a real mother-son dynamic. She's frustrated but she loves him, and he's stubborn but he's trying not to hurt her. The back-and-forth feels lived-in. And Chunya's dialogue with her father is devastating in its simplicity. 'Dad, did you say Brother Jinye is sleeping at Brother Zhijie's house tonight?' The anxiety in that question, the way she's desperately grasping for any sign that he doesn't fully belong to someone else now. Her father's casual cruelty in explaining why men don't go home on their wedding nights when they're unhappy—it's almost too real.
