I need to talk about Shen Xinyan because honestly, I have never wanted to see a character transform this much in a palace drama. For years she just took it — the Empress Dowager's court, the Yao family's schemes, everything. She called herself an ill-fated person and just wanted to live peacefully. But then Yao Jinning tries to drug her with that filthy aphrodisiac wine, and something in Shen Xinyan just snaps. The way she slaps that girl eight times while delivering these devastating lines — 'What your concubine mother failed to teach you, I will teach you properly today' — this isn't just revenge, this is two years of swallowed pride exploding all at once. And A-Man! I love A-Man so much. She's this voice in Shen Xinyan's head, right? Like a conscience or a protector spirit, and she's been watching everything. When she reveals that SHE was sold to a Sichangliaozi by her own husband's family, that hit me like a truck. It explains so much about why she's so fierce with Shen Xinyan — she doesn't want the same thing to happen to her. Their relationship is fascinating because A-Man is basically the sharper, meaner version of what Shen Xinyan could become, and Shen Xinyan is slowly becoming that person. The dynamic with Madam Yao Li is everything too. That old woman thinks she's the Empress Dowager herself, and Shen Xinyan literally calls her out on it: 'Could it be that Mother considers herself comparable to the imperial family?' I nearly screamed reading that. Yao Changcheng just flees the room like a coward while his mother throws tantrums. The whole family dynamic is so toxic — everyone's only looking out for themselves, and Shen Xinyan is the only one who sees it clearly.
I highly recommend this well written novel as it is worth reading
