The author does such a good job building tension when Qin Su walks into that villa and sees the female ghost clinging to him. You can feel the spiritual pressure just from the description—the way every hair on his body stood on end, the chest heaviness, the inability to breathe. Classic ghost attachment symptoms and the author knows her stuff. What made me really care was that this wasn't just some generic haunted situation. The ghost had actually manipulated Gao Wu into accepting a marriage contract through deception. She used an illusion to keep others away from that red envelope and targeted him specifically because he was handsome. There's something deeply violating about that, and it made me root for Qin Su to put a stop to it immediately. But then the stakes shifted in the most unexpected way. Once Qin Su got the ghost alone, the whole thing became less about life-and-death danger and more about... negotiation? Like, the real tension wasn't whether Gao Wu would survive, it was whether Qin Su could get this stubborn ghost to cooperate. And honestly, that was almost more entertaining. The stakes became personal for Qin Su too—she wanted payment, and when Gao Wu tried to offer paintings instead of money, you could practically see her patience evaporating. 'I've changed my mind. That female ghost was actually quite well matched with you.' That line was pure threat disguised as casual conversation, and it worked. Gao Wu immediately remembered where his safe key was. The author really understands how to play with tension—starting high and then finding new, more interesting ways to keep you engaged. Even the domestic subplot with Qianjin wanting expensive dried fish added a layer of stakes that felt oddly important. Because at the end of the day, if Qin Su doesn't make money from these ghost cases, her cat goes hungry. That's a conflict I can get behind.
Here's what makes these chapters genuinely tense: the conflict isn't between people, it's happening INSIDE Shen Simo's head, and that's infinitely more compelling. On the surface, the stakes seem simple—she wants money, he has money, she's conflicted about wanting his money because she might actually want him too. But dig deeper and the stakes become existential. Shen Simo survived her freshman year on 300 yuan a month, instant noodles, and two-yuan vitamins. She doesn't trust anyone. She doesn't trust herself. When Lu HuaiChuan sends 60,000 yuan and a Hermès bag, the conflict isn't about greed—it's about what accepting that generosity MEANS. It means letting someone in. It means her survival strategy of emotional isolation is failing. Her internal monologue is the real battleground: "You're just ordinary friends. Whatever he does has nothing to do with you. Meanwhile, Lu HuaiChuan's conflict is quieter but no less intense. He's an artist on the edge of madness, trying to capture something real through his sketches. The text says he was "teetering on the edge of madness" and "almost addicted to this near-breaking-point euphoria." His stakes are creative and emotional survival. When he says "this is what I've always dreamed of," he's not talking about romance—he's talking about wholeness, about connection, about something he's been denied by his body. The external conflicts—President Wang's unwanted advances, the other woman at the mall, Duan Yu's presence—these are all distractions from the real war happening between two people who keep finding reasons to stay in the same room.
