Xu Hehua
A capable and loyal woman in her late twenties to early thirties. She married at sixteen and waited fifteen years for her husband Li Shanhai, who went missing during the early 1930s. She raised their son Tiedan until he died of illness at age six, then continued caring for her in-laws and never remarried. When Li Shanhai returned as a city government official with a new wife, she divorced him and received several dozen silver dollars plus a donkey from his parents. She used the money to build a three-room red-brick house in Xujiatun, pretending to be broke to avoid envy. She secretly keeps small gold ingots (xiao huangyu) from her former mother-in-law. Kind-hearted, she adopted the starving girl Daniu and regularly cleans the Earth God shrine.
