Xu Hehua's former husband who disappeared while hunting in the mountains in the early 1930s. He was captured by bandits, forced into servitude, and later rescued by the revolutionary army, joining as a recruit. After fifteen years, he returned as a low-ranking government official in the city. He had already remarried a younger woman and fathered two children, claiming arranged marriages were feudal leftovers. He took his elderly parents to the city but left several dozen silver dollars and the family donkey for Xu Hehua before departing.
