Song Xuening (also referred to as Song Ruxue) is the fake daughter of the Song family who stole Lin Nanxiang's engagement to Gu Yanshu, a high-ranking cadre's son. She was engaged to Zhou Yu, a former officer, but refused to marry him after he became a sent-down cripple. The Song family delayed the wedding for a year until it was discovered that Song Xuening was not their biological daughter; the real daughter was Lin Nanxiang. Song Xuening then returned to the Lin family, taking the city marriage that was originally Lin Nanxiang's.
