Juliana Plafins, also called Julia, is Gladys de Belzenoir's cousin. Her family went bankrupt shortly after she turned one, and she has lived in poverty ever since. To survive, she was forced to become the mistress of an elderly marquis and is currently carrying his child. Her uncle, the Earl of Belzenoir, occasionally provides financial support but seems utterly indifferent to her life and circumstances. She tries to make conversation with Lawrence Hamizel about hunting and invites him to the hunting festival in Lombard. Lawrence finds her attempts to evoke pity ridiculous and knows her true nature—she easily tears others down and tarnishes reputations to elevate her own. Despite understanding the struggles of high society, she harbors deep hatred for Lara.
