Also referred to as the old man or Gu Dalan, he is around forty years old but looks fifty due to the hardships of life. He works from dawn to dusk in the fields and carries heavy bundles at the docks in town to earn copper coins to support the family. He is kind and relieved when his son wakes up after a near-fatal head injury. He walks to town to save money rather than taking the ox cart.
