The Earl of Belzenoir is Juliana Plafins's uncle. He occasionally provides financial support to Juliana, but it is not enough for her to escape a life of hardship. He seems utterly indifferent to her life and circumstances, and perhaps could have helped her avoid becoming the mistress of an elderly marquis but chose not to.
