His own daughter, who ran all the way back to save them, and he immediately thought the worst of her. But here's the thing that actually made me respect him a little — and this is uncomfortable for me to admit — when Old Madam Shen turned on him and called him out, I actually felt for him. He's not evil, he's just broken. His world collapsed in three months. He went from Grand Tutor's son to criminal exile. His wife died years ago, his daughter was supposed to marry a Zhuangyuan, and now he's watching his family eat each other metaphorically and he can't accept it literally either. His stubbornness is a trauma response at this point. And Shen Zhinian? She's the real protagonist energy. She's the only one who actually SEEES what's happening and makes the pragmatic choice. She tells her son he's foolish, not evil. There's a difference and it matters.
There's this one detail that keeps haunting me—the Crown Prince only allows himself a quarter of an hour of relaxation during his entire study session. A quarter of an hour. That's it. Everything else is calligraphy, memorization, archery practice in sweltering heat. The author describes this October heat that's warmer than September, and it's not just weather; it's atmosphere. The palace is suffocating literally and metaphorically. I love how the author builds the world through sensory details rather than exposition dumps. The four corners of the study have ice basins, Xiao Sheng is fanning continuously, the food gets replaced several times because the Crown Prince delays meals, and those dishes eventually end up with the servants—reheated multiple times before reaching Zhe Junwu's mouth. She craves meat and doesn't care for vegetables, and the author just slips that in like it's nothing, but it tells you everything about her background. The small study itself is described with lanterns, tea sets, screens—everything neat, everything controlled, just like the Crown Prince. And then General bursts in disrupting all that order. The contrast between the rigid, controlled environment and the wild bird screaming for its human is the most perfect visual metaphor I've encountered in this novel. It's like the story itself is telling us that nature always finds a way to break through confinement.

It's about magic, lust, betrayal, friendship and family but more so it's about individual existence. You will find an MC who has so many powers but no idea how to use them. You will come across a character who has all the knowledge of three realms but no strength and integrity. You will also read about a power-crazed woman who tries to overshadow her shortcomings with passionate sex. There will be weird quests. Some you will like. Some you will hate. I might kill some of your favourite characters too. Don't hate me. Life is unfair, so is this book. But what I do ensure you is, you will have a great time. You will hate some characters and you will do so passionately. You will feel bad for some, and you will do that with all you have. This book is about feeling all sorts of things. Mind you, it has its own flaws. But it would be bad marketing if I tell you all of it now. I will leave it up to you to decide. At the end of the day, this is a story. So, have fun reading.
