There's this one line that won't leave my head: "protecting someone important doesn't need a reason." It's so simple but it carries the entire emotional weight of these chapters. The story is fundamentally about warmth — physical warmth (sharing a bed, braised pork, sunlight streaming through curtains) and emotional warmth (the slow thawing of a lonely boy, the stirring of unacknowledged feelings). The rabbit and tiger motif runs deeper than I initially thought. Rabbits are prey animals — vulnerable, gentle, but persistent. Tigers are apex predators — powerful on the outside, but the story reveals the tiger is actually lonely and shy. That role reversal is the whole point. The one who seems strongest needs protection the most, and the one who seems weakest is the one offering it. And the physical setting matters more than you'd think. The golden morning sunlight, the steaming lunch boxes, the small bedroom with airplane posters on the wall — every scene is saturated with domestic warmth that contrasts sharply with whatever coldness these characters have experienced before. Li Mian's realization that teasing Yunchi brings her "warmth and happiness she hadn't felt in a long time" is the key. She's not just entertaining a kid — she's finding her own place, her own family, her own reason to stay. The rabbit market at the end? A little boy drawn to caged bunnies while a girl who IS the rabbit watches him. The symbolism is almost too perfect.
