Okay, so I need to talk about Liu Shiwen because this man is EVERYTHING and I am obsessed with how the author handled him. First off, the scene where he approaches Xiao Heng to return the jade jue? Chilling. Absolutely chilling. The text says: "Even after eight years in Yanjing, Liu Shiwen still felt intimidated in the presence of such a distinguished figure." EIGHT YEARS. And he's still scared? That tells you everything about Xiao Heng's aura. This kid is young but he carries himself like he was born wearing a crown. But what I love most is Liu Shiwen's motivation. He's not some scheming villain or a sycophant. He's described as "an honest man, having served as an official for over a decade with humility and integrity. He never caused trouble or offended anyone." And yet he's terrified. Why? Because he understands the game. He knows that a gift from the Crown Prince isn't a gift—it's a trap. If he keeps it, the noble families will come for his daughter. If he refuses outright, he offends the Crown Prince. So he tries to return it, and when Xiao Heng refuses to take it back? Liu Shiwen literally blocks his path. "I implore Your Highness to take it back and put my entire family at ease!" This man is brave in the most quiet, desperate way. He's not trying to gain favor. He's trying to survive. And Xiao Heng? He sees through it instantly. The way he takes the jade back without a word and just walks away—that's not cruelty, that's calculation. He's testing Liu Shiwen, or maybe he's just amused. Either way, the power dynamic here is so perfectly rendered. And then there's the whole Liu Yun and her brother dynamic. The cherry biluo scene had me smiling so hard. They push it back and forth like it's some kind of love language. "If Elder Sister wants it so much, then you can have it. I'm not craving it." "I'm not craving it either! Since it's for you, just take it." This is such a normal, real sibling moment. Liu Yun waited all that time to buy it, almost ate it on the way, and then when her brother offers it to her? She gets annoyed because she knows he's lying. She knows he wants it too. But she won't take it because she's the older sister. And he won't take it because he's the younger brother who's supposed to be modest. It's adorable and it makes me want to read more about their relationship. Also, County Princess Rong'an being reprimanded by the Crown Prince? The text says: "Being chastised by the one she admired was the most heart-wrenching blow of all." OOF. That's not just punishment, that's emotional devastation. And Liu Yun, who was humiliated by her, feels this weird mix of satisfaction and relief. She's not a saint, she admits it. She swallowed the humiliation but she's glad Rong'an got hers. I keep thinking about how all these relationships are built on power. Liu Shiwen fears Xiao Heng. Rong'an wanted Xiao Heng's approval. Liu Yun is protected by her brother's promise of future success. Everyone is navigating some hierarchy, some invisible ladder. And Xiao Heng is at the top of it all, barely twenty, already wielding power like it's second nature. But here's what's bothering me—what does Xiao Heng actually want from Liu Shiwen? He took the jade back but his expression was "unreadable, neither pleased nor angered." Is he protecting this family or is he setting them up for something? Because that's how these courts work. A favor isn't free. And I'm not sure Liu Shiwen understands that yet. What do you think? Is Xiao Heng being genuinely kind here or is he playing a longer game? Because I genuinely cannot tell and it's driving me crazy.

Okay, Director Liu needs to be talked about because THIS MAN is a comedy goldmine. He literally gives a speech about how "A girl's focus shouldn't be solely on appearance" and then immediately pivots to praising Director Lin as an "Iron Lady" and a "national model worker" who "commands such respect that everyone stops to greet her." And the narration just says: "Other directors would prefer their subordinates to be competitive and content with staying in their current positions, but Director Liu desperately wished his team would show more initiative. Otherwise, managing them was truly challenging." The author's narration here is SO dry and perfect. Director Liu is trying so hard to motivate people and achieving the exact opposite. "He made a habit of motivating everyone daily, yet somehow always achieved the opposite effect — a rather remarkable feat." I was wheezing. And Chen Qing's dialogue as a salesperson is *chef's kiss*. When she's pitching to Tian Mengya: "I guarantee fair prices for all, young and old alike" and then scooting her stool closer and closer until Tian Mengya is like "WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU ARE RIGHT NOW??" The physical comedy of Chen Qing moving her stool closer while being polite and obsequious is hilarious. The line "Such was the shamelessness of a debtor" when Chen Qing is willing to sketch for free first? That's the narrator winking at us. And Chen Qing's internal monologue about her sales experience: "By making herself seem disadvantaged, the other party would soften. Once their guard was down, closing the deal became easy." This woman is a BUSINESSWOMAN and I respect it. The dialogue throughout these chapters feels so natural — each character has a distinct voice. He Yuting's childish logic, He Yuxiang's serious business brain, Chen Qing's mix of modern sensibility and period-appropriate speech, and Director Liu's unintentional comedy. The author's voice is sharp, witty, and never talks down to the reader.
Good story but the author keeps on dragging the story making hardly any progress with each chapter
As always, Muse created a masterpiece with this book. The attention to detail, the character development, and of course the happily ever after. I highly recommend not only this book but all of her other books as well. Thank you Muse
