He's performing the role of the devoted fiancé while simultaneously cornering Gu Ning at every turn. And Jia Xiangwei's voice is so distinct—she's warm, slightly chatty, the kind of mother who boasts about her gardening choices even in tragic circumstances. "I'm not exaggerating—every sapling I selected was of the finest quality. It took me considerable effort back then!" This is a woman trying to normalcy-bomb her way through grief, and it breaks my heart. The most devastating exchange is probably when Jia Xiangwei asks for Gu Ning's given name, and Chi Yan jumps in to explain the character before Gu Ning can even respond. He's not just answering for her—he's controlling the narrative of who she is in this room. And that final line from him, asking if her son's beloved shares the same name... that's not curiosity, that's a trap. Beautiful, polite, devastating dialogue.
