I have to talk about the atmosphere in this chapter because the author has absolutely NAILLED the setting. The wooden house. The hillside. The bicycle with a burlap sack full of lunch boxes. The large tree beside the cabin where they set up the folding table. These aren't just background details — they create this entire world that feels suffocatingly real and isolating. Shen Yingying is trapped in a place with no mobile phones, no WiFi, no air conditioning, and the physical environment reflects that. She's exposed on open hillsides, sitting at a wooden table under a tree, eating from aluminum lunch boxes because that's what people used back then. The most cinematic moment has to be Wu Xiaoxia walking away beneath the setting sun. Shen Yingying watches her retreating figure and imagines her face — filled with grievance and heartbreak, on the verge of tears. The sunset imagery, the solitude, the emotional devastation — this reads like a film scene. I could literally see it. And the contrast between the warmth of the food (the string beans and eggplant, the savory sauce, the actual care in Xie Fangzhu bringing her lunch) against the cold reality of her situation — no escape, no modern comforts, stuck with a man who could destroy her — that juxtaposition is what makes this setting so powerful. It's not just a backdrop, it's a character in itself.
