Okay so this murder case at the beginning is actually a really clever framing device. Qiao Huan just casually guesses it's a love triangle and the other person is like 'your word is quite accurate.' That's it, that's the hook. The author doesn't waste time with a long investigation scene — just drops the verdict and moves on. I love that. It establishes the world right away: people are dying, emotions run wild, and our protagonist is sharp enough to piece things together without breaking a sweat. But the real plot movement happens with Ye Yunzhou. The brain blood clot, the leg injury, the secret surgery in her space — this is where the story gets interesting. We're not just getting a romance subplot, we're getting a medical mystery wrapped in a survival scenario. And then Jian Ying shows up at the end like a little ghost by the wall, and suddenly there's another thread: an apprentice, a granddaughter of a TCM doctor, a military doctor mother. The author is building a whole network of characters around Qiao Huan, and I'm here for it. The plot feels tight because nothing is wasted. Every scene does double duty — the Lei Ting backstory gives us humor AND establishes Qiao Huan's personality, the surgery scene gives us medical tension AND romantic proximity, the Jian Ying introduction gives us a new character AND sets up future plotlines. That's good craftsmanship.
Let me just say—the sensory details in this passage are INSANE. I could literally smell the boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes. I could feel the gray morning sky, the mud on their cloth shoes, the weight of the basket on Lin Xiaohe's back. The author didn't just describe a market scene, they built an entire world that feels lived-in and breathing. The shepherd's purse growing three or four times normal size—this detail does so much work. It tells us this is a world where the land itself seems different, maybe richer, maybe magical in a quiet way. The plant ash used instead of soap. The fact that they can't scan QR codes and some customers walk away because of it. These tiny worldbuilding choices make everything feel real. The old lady fumbling through her basket for small change, the stallholder glaring because they sold out before him, Chen Fang's market building having living quarters on the second floor—every detail adds texture. And the food descriptions! The white-fleshed vs pumpkin-colored sweet potatoes, the boiled potatoes waiting on the bed for whoever wakes up, the promise of stir-fried fatty meat with rice. This is a world where food is survival and celebration at the same time. Every meal matters. Every yuan matters.
Okay so here's the thing that got me — the Chen Family, who I thought were just quietly enduring, are now murmuring complaints in private. That's a shift. They've been the most composed of the bunch, the ones keeping their heads down, and now even they can't hold it together. And it makes total sense when you think about it. Hunger does something to people. It strips away the politeness, the loyalty, the patience. The Jun Family, who were already on the outside looking in, are now the targets of all this frustration. I love how the author shows us that exile isn't just about being far from home — it's about watching the people around you turn into strangers. Un Moye healing and Prince Qin recovering should be good news, right? But instead, the physical improvement of the leaders just makes the social deterioration more obvious. When everyone's healthy enough to be angry, that's when the real danger starts. This is the moment before everything falls apart, and I can feel it in my bones.
very original idea. hopping for next chapter soon
You, my dear, are quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! Can't wait to read all the upcoming chapters. In the meantime, I quickly previewed some of your other novels listed here and am struggling with which one to delve into next. They all seem so intriguing! Please never stop writing! ??
Writing quality is not that bad, however There are many instances Of Repeated paragraphs and pages 9-15 have what seems like entire pages copy pasted with little changes. the parts that are not copied arent bad. i only read to pay Wall and decided not to continue due to this.
