Let me start with the housing situation because it's a perfect microcosm of the whole system. The average factory workers live in shared dormitories. The Xu family gets a small courtyard because Xu Weishan is a high-ranking engineer. And then at the back of the complex, the even more senior engineers and factory directors live in little Western-style villas. This is the entire class structure of 1970s Chinese industrial society laid out in three sentences. Jiang Wanwan doesn't even go upstairs to He Qingqing's apartment because she knows the parents will mock her — she sits on the steps and eats boiled eggs instead. The spatial dynamics tell you everything about social standing and shame. Then there's the empty lot between the factory complex and the elementary school, described as having "a few rusty pull-up bars, charmingly known as the school's playground." That word charmingly is doing so much work. It's ironic, it's sad, it's exactly the kind of place where two teenage girls would have a secret conversation away from prying eyes. But the scene that really stuck with me is the one at Jiang Wanwan's house at night. She's sitting alone in her room, it's gotten dark outside, and from the courtyard she can hear her brother cheering, her stepsister scolding him, and her stepfather's hearty laugh. Along with that comes the smell of roast chicken. She swallows. She's excluded from that warmth, excluded from that food, and her mind goes to the one person who showed her any kindness — the boy with the roast chicken. The sensory details here are devastating. The sounds of a family that isn't hers, the smell of food she didn't get to eat, and the image of a handsome face she can't stop thinking about. It's cinematic. I could see the camera panning from the dark window to the lit courtyard, from her lonely figure to the warm golden light of the family dinner. And then cut to her dream, where she's the overbearing CEO and the roast chicken is the object of her desire. The author is weaving together so many threads — class, family, hunger, loneliness, attraction — and it all comes down to a girl sitting alone in a dark room smelling someone else's dinner.
I cannot stop thinking about the dialogue between Feng Qingsui and Madam Wei. It is genuinely one of the funniest exchanges I have read in a long time, and I need to quote it because it deserves to be immortalized. Madam Wei: 'Can you make me lose twenty pounds in half a month?' Feng Qingsui: 'I can help you lose twenty catties in half a month, but you'll need to be determined.' Then she lays out the diet. No sugar. Two meals a day. Two hours of walking. And Madam Wei's response is just—'You're asking for my life!' This is such a natural, human reaction. She's not being dramatic; she's being honest. She's a noblewoman who has never had to endure anything in her life, and this widow is asking her to live like a peasant. But then Feng Qingsui drops the tumor line and I literally gasped out loud. 'We can choose tumors that aren't likely to cause death easily, cut a small piece from them, make an incision on your body, and apply it there.' Madam Wei's response is just '？？？！！！' and I wish the English translation had captured that energy as perfectly. The deadpan delivery of something absolutely unhinged is peak comedy. And the Ji Changqing scene with his mother? The banter is so sharp and natural. Madam Qi: 'Who said I left supper for you?' Ji Changqing: '...I did drink the soup.' Madam Qi: 'Just one sip.' Ji Changqing: '...' This is a mother-son relationship built on decades of inside jokes and gentle roasting. You can feel the warmth underneath the teasing. The overheard conversation between Cuique and that man is also brilliantly done. 'What are you dragging me to the lakeside for on such a cold day?' 'Keep your voice down. Don't let Father hear.' This is whispered, conspiratorial, dangerous. The dialogue here is sparse but loaded—every line reveals something about their relationship and their intent without spelling it out. The author's voice throughout is this perfect blend of wry observation and emotional depth. Feng Qingsui's internal monologue is sharp, slightly cynical, but never mean-spirited. She observes people with the precision of a physician and the curiosity of someone who has survived by paying attention. Her voice feels completely distinct from the other characters, and that's no small feat.
