Also the dream sequence where she visits her parents—it's not just emotional fluff, it's a PLOT DEVICE. 66 literally says the energy fluctuation caused a temporary error sending her consciousness back. This means there's a mechanical system at work here that could potentially be exploited or fail. The author is weaving multiple threads: the romance confirmation, the monster suspicion subplot, the system mechanics, and the zombie mission—all converging. I'm obsessed with where this is going.
Okay so this whole arc is a masterclass in building tension. Cheng Youyou gets accused by a mob of tribal women—Zuo Wa's behind it, obviously—and instead of running or fighting back, she does the complete opposite. She walks straight to Lu Xi's cave. In a world where female beastfolk rarely survive childbirth, twins are basically a death sentence. The author drops this worldbuilding fact naturally through the crowd's reaction—no info-dump, just organic. And then Cheng Youyou having to use her last reserves of healing power, burning her own life force... that's the kind of sacrifice that makes you sit up straight. The pacing is relentless. Accusation → chase → arrival → diagnosis → crowd interference → surgery prep → birth → crisis → resolution. Each beat pushes forward with zero fat. My only minor gripe is that Zuo Wa's scheming is pretty transparent from the start, but honestly, I didn't care because the birth scene was so gripping I couldn't look away.
