I need to just be honest about where we are in the story right now because the tension has gone from simmering to absolute panic in the span of a few paragraphs and I am not okay. Let me lay out what we know: Qin Ziheng is four years old. He has no mother. His father is absent. His grandfather goes out to herd cattle and leaves him alone. The boy walks all the way into town — kilometers away — just to listen to a school he's not enrolled in. And then one day, Grandpa Qin comes home and he's gone. The stakes here are devastatingly simple. This is a four-year-old boy who doesn't speak, who is small and thin and fair-skinned and doesn't look like anyone in this village, wandering alone in an area between the village and the town. He has no one who will immediately know to look for him. His father is in the city. His mother has disappeared entirely. The only person who would be frantic is an old man who herds cattle. And the search scenes — God, the search scenes. Grandpa Qin 'was weeping and shouting all at once, shouted himself hoarse.' He begged people to dredge the pond. He dug through his own outhouse latrine pit. This is a man who has already lost everything once and is now facing the possibility of losing the only child he ever truly claimed as his own. The suspense is suffocating because we know what's at stake — this is a child who has survived abandonment, gossip, and neglect, and now he's simply... gone. The author hasn't given us any relief. No hint of where he went. No sign that he'll be found. Just an old man crying and a village searching and a boy who just wanted to learn. I need to know what happens next and I don't think I can sleep until I read more.
