We're inside her head, feeling that damp heaviness in her chest. And then Wei Lin bursts through the door—"Yundai!"—rushed and anxious, and the energy spikes again. The herbal scent that washes over Xu Songhe when she arrives, the warm interior, the old man stooping to arrange medicines. Every sensory detail is dialed up. The temple scene is where the atmosphere really shifts though. The man walking into the temple "ignoring the falling snow," sinking to his knees, carefully arranging fruit before the statue. This is cinematic. I could see this as a film — the incense smoke curling upward, the statue's face, the puddle of melted snow on the floor. And then Xu Songhe's tears, the wet trail on her cheek, Qi Wuyang watching her with that unreadable expression. The author builds this world where warmth and unease coexist, and it's gorgeous.
Okay so this chapter is absolutely wild. Let me just say it straight: Lu Mingtang is not your average palace lady. He's supposed to be this incompetent, cruel young emperor who only cares about tormenting people. Yet the moment Lu Mingtang appears, everything shifts. He lets her sleep on his dragon bed. He watches her fight him. He even lets her steal his waist token. Why? Because for the first time, someone isn't afraid of him. Someone actually challenged him. That's the hook that made me stay up until 3 AM reading. The assassination subplot with Chancellor Wei is also brilliantly woven in. He's playing both sides — keeping the foolish emperor alive because it's convenient, but also knowing the Empress Dowager's faction is a threat. And Jiang Chaosheng? That guy's eyes when he says 'yes, Father' — you can tell he's hiding something huge. The plot threads are tightening like a noose.
Something I think about time-from-time is if I were to die, and come back to life in a different body, which me would be me? Would the new, current me be the true me? But then, would the previous me, the me I had spent my whole life as, would that me have just been a like, a fake? I believe that’s what this story wants to tell: who am I? This translucent “I” that changes constantly, who is that “I”? Can something ever changing be confined to a singular name?I wonder how this story will develop and who Zephyr—Ra’eh will assert themself as. Will they be either of the two, or will they adopt a new identity? I wonder.
