Summary

Xu Songhe, a modern corporate employee, dies in a traffic accident and transmigrates into a fantasy novel. She awakens in a dark, damp cave surrounded by grotesque monsters. A voice in her head identifies itself as a System, explaining that she must raise the favorability of her future husband to one hundred percent to reconstruct her body and return to her original world. The only other human in the cave is a strikingly handsome young man named Qi Wuyang, who appears injured and unconscious. Xu Songhe attempts to protect him from the demons, smearing blood on herself to appear unworthy of being eaten. When a four-eyed demon attacks, Qi Wuyang awakens and effortlessly kills it, revealing immense power. He then destroys the entire cave entrance, burying the remaining demons, but treats Xu Songhe with cold indifference.

Qi Wuyang leaves her behind, but Xu Songhe follows him, desperate for protection in this hostile world. During their journey, she accidentally rips off his arm, only to watch it regenerate instantly. They take a job at a restaurant to appease a difficult guest, Zhuo Zixun, the arrogant young master of the ruling Flowing Cloud Sect. Xu Songhe cleverly resolves his complaints about the lighting using a mirror, earning the shopkeeper's promise of payment. However, the shopkeeper reneges and sends thugs to attack them. Qi Wuyang kills the thugs with a single leaf, causing chaos. Later, Zhuo Zixun accidentally hits Xu Songhe with his carriage. To avoid scandal, he compensates her with the keys to an abandoned house. Xu Songhe accepts, securing her first shelter in this world.

That night, pursuers sent by the Flowing Cloud Sect track Qi Wuyang to Xu Songhe's new home. They capture her and torture her, demanding to know Qi Wuyang's whereabouts. The System assures her that Qi Wuyang will come because of their Heart-to-Heart Connection. True to the System's word, Qi Wuyang appears and rescues her. He reveals a past connection to the Flowing Cloud Sect, having destroyed it previously. He captures the sect leader and his son, using them as leverage. Xu Songhe realizes that while Qi Wuyang is dangerous and emotionally detached, he is also her only chance at survival and returning home. She continues to cling to him, navigating a world where she is physically weak but bound to a powerful, enigmatic figure who may or may not care for her existence.

The atmosphere in this chapter is absolutely *chef's kiss*. Let me just start by saying: the contrast between the white void of snow outside and this warm, clean, smiling town is so vividly drawn that I literally felt the temperature shift. "The world outside was no longer a white void of snow. The street was clean and dry, lined with houses. Passersby wore smiles on their faces, looking as if they were in a place completely opposite to the harsh winter." This line hit me so hard. It's like stepping out of a nightmare into a painting. But the author doesn't let you relax for long — right after this paradise description, we get the detail about the snow being "so much lighter" here than outside. Lighter. As in less real. As in this place exists on a different frequency. And then the pharmacy itself! The wooden sign with a thin layer of dust, the large characters still faintly visible — this is worldbuilding through texture, not exposition. I can practically smell the herbs. The herbal scent that washes over Xu Songhe when she arrives, the warm interior, the old man stooping to arrange medicines. Every sensory detail is dialed up. The temple scene is where the atmosphere really shifts though. The man walking into the temple "ignoring the falling snow," sinking to his knees, carefully arranging fruit before the statue. This is cinematic. I could see this as a film — the incense smoke curling upward, the statue's face, the puddle of melted snow on the floor. And then Xu Songhe's tears, the wet trail on her cheek, Qi Wuyang watching her with that unreadable expression. The author builds this world where warmth and unease coexist, and it's gorgeous.

Let's talk about stakes because this opening is playing 4D chess with survival. Xu Songhe just died once—run over by a truck, transmigrated into a fantasy novel, woke up on a stone slab surrounded by man-eating demons. The System tells her the only way home is to raise favorability to 100% with this terrifying young man. So basically, she has to befriend the most dangerous person in the cave while pretending not to be terrified, all while covered in fake blood and praying the demons don't come back. And then the four-eyed demon shows up. She throws herself in front of the boy to protect him—her first act of genuine courage in this world—and gets slammed into a wall like a ragdoll. The System's cheerful "Excellent, Host!" in the middle of that is almost comedic in its cruelty. What keeps me on edge is the uncertainty. Is the young man actually on her side? He saved her from the demon, sure, but he also casually considered killing her. He gave her three bamboo whistles and then thought to himself he'd never actually come if she blew them. Is he manipulating her? Protecting her? Both? The stakes aren't just about survival anymore—they're about trust in a world where everyone wants to eat you. Okay so let me just say—Chapter 9 is a masterclass in tension. Xu Songhe is literally chained up in a freezing room, and the author doesn't let up for a single second. First Qi Wuyang refuses to help her, then he gives her an impossible choice: break free or freeze. And she tries. She actually tries, multiple times, and fails because the chains are too short and the pain is too much. I was literally on the edge of my seat. But then—the dagger scene. This is where it gets brilliant. She asks him to pick up the dagger, claims she'd rather die than freeze, and when he hands it to her, she yells a warning about the other men attacking. I need to talk about the absolute absurdity and weird tenderness of this opening. Xu Songhe, a complete stranger, just woke up in another world and the first human interaction she has involves her smearing corpse-blood all over his arm while he's unconscious. She apologizes to him. She THANKS him. And then calls him "Husband" to his face. "Young Master, you were so cool just now! Thank goodness you were here." — This line made me laugh out loud and also feel deeply for her. She's terrified, she's grieving her old life, she just saw a snake demon cry, and her coping mechanism is to flirt with the most dangerous person in the cave. But underneath the comedy, there's something genuinely touching about her desperation for connection. She's alone in a hell dimension and this guy is the only other human. When she throws herself in front of him to protect him, even though she's shaking and covered in blood and knows she can't fight—that's not just plot convenience. That's a person choosing to care about someone when everything in her screams self-preservation. And his response? He looks at her like she's nothing. But he doesn't kill her. He gives her whistles. He lets her follow. The emotional tension between her desperate need for him and his cold indifference is going to be so good to watch unfold.
